Tonearms

A couple things to think about Larry, you need to consider the table your putting it on, does it have an armboard avaliable to mount it? Is it a suspended platform or rigid? Some arms need room under the mounting board to fit. If you 're talkin' about the Micro Seiki, the Black Widow and the similair Grace 707 will sound superb for a couple hundred. I need to check if SME will work with yours.

The TT's main thing is to spin the Lp accurately and provide isolation from vibrations in the air and through the floor. Don't skimp on the arm or cart. that's where your bang for your buck come in!

Unless get into $10,000 Rockport arms and $15,000 Lyrca carts :o
 
No I was talking in general about tonearms. For half way normal people like us. You have Grace arms and Jilco. You have straight, S, and J shaped arms. I like straight arms. Don't know why but I do.

I may have an opportunity to "steal" an Ariston Audio RD-90 turntable. I already have an Ariston RD-80 with ADC ALT-1 straight tonearm and Grado M2+ cartridge. The RD-90 I'm interested in is still boxed, and unused, but I would have to supply a tonearm and cartridge. Any good matches for the RD-90 in respect to tonearms?

On the TT thing all I can say is what I like so far. I do like straight arms. The one on the Micro looks like a Grace. I put a Shure M97XE on it. It was recommended by a friend who makes his own TTs. It cost me 57.00. There is a stylus upgrade by Jico. It is suppose to be something else. But it is 175.00.

Have you did any research on what arms will fit or can you get different arm boards for it? Now my Music Halls have carbon fiber arms. I do like a low mass and weight tonearm.

Thanks for the tips, Larry. I use the ADC straight arm with aluminum tube on my RD-80, and there appears to be an ADC LMF-1 carbon fibre tubed tonearm. The RD-90 has an active suspension.

Yes, the RB250 and RB251 have been used, as well as an SME. I like your cartridge choice for your Micro.

I was complaining because before I was losing volume through my phono amps. With this set up that isn't happening. I just wonder what the Jico would sound like. This cart sounds very well rounded. I mean I can't hear any diminishing factors. It just sounds to good for 57.00.

I do like low mass arms. They seem to sound so much better than the S shape aluminum arms that weigh 20 lbs. LOL

Do you have the part# for the Jico stylus? So, the magic combination is this particular stylus mounted in the Shure M97XE cartridge? You bought your cartridge from where for $57? It's worth 2x that.

Thanks Larry. The money I will save in buying the Ariston Audio RD-90 will justify buying the SAS needle. I just have to ensure the TT is still available.

I was reading how the ariston beat the Rega LP12 if I remember the numbers right. When you get it tell me the difference in sound from the original to the Jico.

That's interesting. I don't know much about my Ariston Audio RD-80 transcription Deck, especailly, where it sits in the pecking order of turntables within the same budget. I found this one at the min flea market, with a whole bunch of uncommon stereo pieces. It was complete, as you see it. I did have a technician lube and check the cartidge for proper alignment:
