I come out of lurking because a certain kind of bug has burrowed into the back of my mind, disrupting over a solid year of blissful listening pleasure...

I finally seem to have found "the song". The song I wish my speakers, system and room were capable of accurately reproducing. The bass just doesn't resolve well with my particular combination. I may have to go back to the drawing board or even possibly resort to separate powered subwoofers to make this one work right. Anyone else have something that works well with this one? Please do share! At "realistic" listening levels, please (I'm at least 90db @ 4m):

Dude!!!1 A pair of " Super K's" and a wopl 1000 WOULD BLOW YOU BACK OUT THE DOOR. Shpongle has better stuff than that. "Tales of the Inexpressible" track 2 Star Shpongled Banner would double as CPR paddles!!

LOL!

No, I'm a huge Shpongle fan too, and electronica in general. Nothing quite resonates with my whole room like this one particular track. Of course, as I mentioned in the OP, I realize a lot of it is the room itself too... especially since I run full dipoles. 18" guitar amp woofers for everything below about 300Hz and a Yamaha M-65 just to drive them. 90db @ 4m (my chosen listening spot) doesn't even make the Yammy break out in a sweat... but I can hear cone break up for real with this track... and it bothers me! :|

That's ok though... I wondered if these were finally going to be my long term keepers. Kind of nice to think about making sawdust again! Maybe dual 12" ripoles or something for the next build. Suggestions welcome!

I'll agree, the one you linked is good, I didn't hear the bass was any more present than in those I just asked about.

Reference THIS...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuB4KS37ZSc SAME SONG

If you are expecting third harmonic car bass, it ain't there. My Pioneer CS-A31s were quite happy and they've never had a problem in ~45 years. If they DID I have all the parts!

If you ARE...there's a problem.

Damn that was a nice jam. THANKS!

There IS a problem, and NO, that is not the same song.

You can see that the first version I posted (analysis on the right, below) has all the lower frequencies boosted significantly. I don't know if that's the way it was when it was ripped for youtube or if a "thumper car" enthusiast decided to add extra emphasis but it is certainly present, especially below 50 hz. But yes, reproduction on my system in my room reminds me somewhat of 3rd harmonics heard in some car stereos. I should add that the Audio-technica ATH-M50s that I use for sampling off my desktop don't exhibit this same negative effects... but they are only flat to around 40 hz. (Sample size of 4 seconds beginning at the same first sub-50hz peak in both songs, 0.01 second accuracy, accumulated peak response)

I suppose I'll have to dig out my calibration mic and see what's really going on in my room with this one... It just irks me that a single song can cause me so much trouble

DOH!

Actually going back and turning it up reveals that my headphones DO suffer some of the same distortion. I guess the bass in the first version is just over-emphasized to the point of breakup.

You can see here how badly the first version I posted clips compared to the second version below:

I guess that just goes to prove... A terrible recording will still sound terrible, even on better equipment! I AM curious though why you guys didn't hear the same clipping and distortion, especially if you pushed above 90db@4m?

Did you use a MP3 for this? What bitrate? Important to know... Not all mp3 encoders deliver the same quality.

32 bit 48000Hz doesn't say much to me, but what I see below looks like a compression problem.

So, a bit more detailed information about the source you've used in this matter and maybe I can help a little.

Both versions were ripped from youtube at "highest quality" and transcoded to 16 bit mp3 unless a higher quality version was available. As you can see from my last post these were processed and analyzed at 48000 Hz, 32bit float.

This is a good MP3 file (320 / 16 bit 44100Hz.) of it: (non Youtube)

This track is pushed to the limit, over 0dB sometimes, and I do hear some imperfections in the bassline, so it's not your fault...

It is in the track itself....

That's the conclusion I came to as well. Take a poke at the "original" and see what analysis you come up with?

As I said I love Sphongle... I have all their recordings (lossless FLAC ripped from CD) and most of Younger Brother, etc. on MP3.

For bass... try Felix Laband's "Donkey Rattle": http://youtu.be/DafuN_gqI7s

My speakers, as much as I love electronica, were really designed and built with one thing in mind... make an upright acoustic bass sound as realistic as possible. Charles Mingus Big Band "Haitian Fight Song" is one of my references. It's not only a good example of "real" bass but will give the rest of the frequency range a serious work out too... http://youtu.be/WPfSD0vJi8Y

Another of my references was making Bela Fleck And Edgar Meyer sound "live". You want a realistic bass workout for your speakers? Try this one at realistic levels... say 80db (at 12 feet or so) ;) May I present "Bug Tussle": http://grooveshark.com/s/Bug+Tussle+Live/4sgPX7?src=5

Here's the Youtube version (saved as WAV):

This one is limited into the safe zone under 0dB, but the audio quality of it must be mp3 128 or lower.
This one is sounding completely different than the 320 version.

Maybe it's fun to send you the version I have to see how it will turn out.
