I have seen the shuttle land twice in Mohave. I was a guest of NASA on one landing which was cool. My first landing was after the crash. My takeoff I was sitting on the railroad tracks at a store in Orlando drinking beer with a friend.

We will now pay the Russians for a seat at the cost of 64 million dollars each time. We are the Pioneers of space. Now what happens next. Thanks to this Pres. A lot of people lose their jobs. My wife said this morning JFK is spinning in his grave. I'm a little sad. As a child we always watched all the space missions on TV at school. Then as an adult I watched. We were taught to be proud of our accomplishments. Some are going to say we can't afford it. We can't afford Obamacare either. So what can we afford? We charged the other countries to carry their payloads. No one rode for free.

I'll miss it too! I got to see it on the back of the 747 heading back to FL several times, they fly right over Tucson.

But Damnit Larry, quit blamming everything on Obama, your a broken record with this lately, it wasn't just him. It was alot of things for a lot of reasons, I'm in a really crappy mood right now, so get your facts straight please before posting things like this out in the public forum. Or I'll dig up the lateest on your front running conservitive presidential canidates. There's been some juicy stuff about Fox News and Murdoch and various infighting in the ranks, probably inbreeding too!!

Stuwee if he didn't cut Nasa funding. I will send you and him a letter and apologize.

Ok, let's just talk about the real subject then and not drag Obama into it or Bush who was the real problem anyway (he hated astronaughts).

I grow up listening to all the stuff on TV and the radio late at night under the covers (they had spaceships and stars on them). When I got older I made an entire solar system for my ceiling with styrofoam balls, I drew every planet with pastels and won several trophies (all lost except for Neptune, which my sister saved and had framed for me, I said "Why oh why not Uranus????") She hit me  !! Sad it had to come to this! The end I mean....

F&^*'n Bush and his Goddamned War and his kissass oil company croonies we wouldn't have this happening. I'd like to shoot an Apollo 13 rocket up their asses

This is the surviving drawing, I was only 12 and the pastels I did were playgerized from National Geographic paintings in an issue that year, my teacher let me enter them as long as I gave credit to the original artist. I copied alot of stuff back then, I hadn't developed my 'eye' yet :cyclops: ! I loved anything about outerspace, I probably came from there :alien:

Ok let us bring up Bush. If I remember right he wanted to go to the moon again. I'm just sad in our life time so many things have happened that hasn't happened in the generations before us and I will say after us. Children now days have no comprehension of what all has went on in our lifetime.

Yeah to the Moon Alice

Larry, we'd already been there several times, waste of money, Mars is where we need to go, then even farther out to Titan (Saturn's moon with water on it!!)

Then fold time and space and meet some aliens :reindeer:

The one to the moon was going to be used to go to mars. It was sort of a test flight. I'm just sad. I watched it come in for the landing this morning. There is not much of a glide ratio on it for sure. When I saw it land people are dumb. They heard the sonic boom and started looking to the west. I looked to the east and there she was. It had left the sonic boom behind. They were describing coming back in, All the different colors of plasma as they were starting to enter the orbit. My Uncle worked at Canaveral for many years.

Yep, I hate to see the shuttle program go. Nasa costs 18 Billion a year to fund and National Defense costs 1.4 Trillion a year to run. You make the call, or evidently Obama's predecessor already made the call. :cyclops:

We can't keep funding everything. I would say cut defense spending by 18 Billion a year to fund Nasa.

Keeping my nose to the grind stone on a defense contract. You know $200 washers, $600 bolts and $4000 airplane toilets. Gotta love that Bush. :thumbright:

Refurbishing a Shuttle cost a small fortune and the big external tank has a foam covering that we've known is capable of damaging critical parts of the vehicle to the point of causing vehicle failure and death of the crew. A large piece of this foam knocked a hole in a wing. Without inspection the wing created thermal conditions on re-entry which quickly tore the vehicle apart over Texas, killing a crew of seven I believe it was.

The Challenger disaster was caused when temperature perameters were ignored and gaskets in the solid booster rockets ignited the external fuel tank (and not even at suborbital flight levels. the shock of throttle-up caused the complete failure of the SRB). The accompanying fuel tank had no trouble becoming an explosive device.

The Shuttle was noble, it was grand and it was something NASA administrators tried to ignore twice but fourteen people paid for that ignorance. The design was flawed and yet we made it fly dozens of times. It won't happen this way again, mainly because we learned it shouldn't.

But YES, IT WAS A RIDE!

When they parked the shuttle they handed out over 9,000 pink slips, on the spot. You're done, now that's sad. think of all the talent and potential that just hit the street.
