Well I went and bought the bolts to install my speaker bases. I didn't go with spikes. New floor and all. I went with carriage bolts so not to hurt my floor. Still putting a wood pad down.

I have seen spikes that sit on matching flat disks with a small concave dimple in the middle. I think the purpose of the spikes is to concentrate the weight on the smallest possible area to prevent the speaker from moving when the bass gets close to mach 8. The audio types call this "coupling" the speaker to the floor. Bolts and a wood pad sorta defeats that, I think, maybe, sort of.
 
That's goin out on a limb, I think, maybe, sort of. ( Couldn't help it)
 
I'll have to get my manual out but I think that is where I read to use carriage bolts on the wood floors. Also spikes are used used on carpet to couple the speaker to the wood. I am using the bolts to align the the speakers by tilting them.

I found a bunch of pokey holes on the bottom of my old Advent cabinets.

Not a sight I dig. I put speakers on plastic 'milkcrates' or boxes for resonance.

Nice looking stands can be made easily for this purpose. It only takes an open top and bottom box with the back higher then the front, the sides don't even need to follow the taper, then cradle the speaker in the open top, adjust the angle by moving the speaker forward or backward in the cradle.

OK I did read it in the manual

C. If you set the speakers on a wood floor, place a coin
under each stand spike or use 3/8-16 thread carriage
bolts in place of the spikes to prevent damage to the
floor. Carriage bolts have rounded heads that will not
put holes in the floor.
D. Keep the spikes or carriage bolts on the bottom of the
stands as short as possible while still accomplishing the
proper vertical angle for your listening height and

Don,t care for spikes Idea I made Angled speaker stands per Pioneer spec for HPM100,,after I sold the speakers I retained the stands
 
Old Drag racing slicks laid on their side work well, but you need BIG speakers
