Just wanted to introduce myself as I look forward to joining this forum. I'm not very good with computers so it will probably take me awhile to get used to this forum. Got started back into this hobby with my purchase of a Phase Linear 400. A friend of mine in the High School days had one and I always wanted on.Thirthy years later and I've had it for about a year now and have collected many other pieces along with it. I'm also quite the Marantz fan too. Lee is fixing to get my PL 400 for upgrades and I cant wait! :cheers:Anyway just wanted to say Hi and look forward to many conversations with you all.:wave:

Welcome! I'm not a PL guy only that I never owned one, but I think Bob Carver is amazing. Missed out on his Sunfire 2 channel when I was selling them (young dad, no $). Amazing sound. Anywho, glad to see new people about.

Cheers,
Joe

Hey Ken, good to see a new face! Welcome to the forum, and don't hesitate to drop me a line if you have any issues "gettin 'round" or otherwise here!

Yep, I definitely fell for the sound of the PL's .. especially after we hot rod em! I'm getting my latest 700 in order as you can see. Doing pretty good there, but still "learning the system" a bit since there are some touches of finesse ya have to learn about while doing a few of 'em. But Lee tells me DONT GIVE UP, so I'll keep on a pluggin.. hehe.

Welcome!

Welcome Ken,
I think I have a Carver amp around here. I think it is one of the big magnetic field one- keep on blowing the Triac in it. There must be a mod for that unit. I am more involved with tape deck about 12 hours of the day.

The blown triac is a symptom of a much worse condition. It's a well known problem and fixable.

The Triac was replaced but there is something causing it to blow- maybe because I only fire this unit up once every few years or maybe it has had a bad rectifier in it or bad cap all the time. I bought it from a fellow worker at Hughes and he said it was a Onkyo receiver. OK, I said, I opened the box and found a Carver 4FT or whatever the number is- I have to go find the unit to see. I know it was a great unit but this has a problem that needs to be resolved. The Triac does not look like a TO-220 type either. It is one of those TO-3 looking packages. Oh I think it is an M4.0t model.

Yeah Sam I have a link to Carver's website that covers that repair in detail. Let me see if i can find it. It's in my computer somewhere. The triac is a symptom, other things need to addressed before that will not blow. hang on..

Thanks Lee,
This is surely a helpful bit of info. Now all I have to do is get my old HP 4 Plus to stop jamming paper and I can get back to work. That is what I get for using those old HP4's, I have maybe 4 of them here,
