Lately I've been listening to a couple mix tapes of individual artists and planning a couple more. Just finished the A side of one this morning actually that I hope to finish tomorrow. Now, I'm a big fan of full albums from my favorite artists, but sometimes a nice long mix of favorites is just really fun, especially for casual listening in the background. So far, I've used Maxell XL II 110 tapes for mixes of Tom Waits and Lou Reed. Recorded the A side of a Bowie mix and planning on one with Iggy Pop's solo stuff up next. Have a few others I'll start in on after that, will probably do a Clash one for example. I usually try to hit most of the big iconic songs, but like having those personal favorites pop up that would have not been selected for commercial hits collections to fill things out.

Anyone else like making these? Any artists you've compiled into a particularly enjoyable tape? Do you stick with mostly the bigger hits or just go with lesser known tracks?

I don't recall doing this kind of thing when I used to own a tape deck. The thought of making a David Bowie mix does sound good though!

I used to select some of the least liked tracks from my favourite artists and then dump them on to cassette. I then had a chance to "warm" to them in one go.

I oftenly use to mix a single artist on a tape or maybe on just one side of it, like their ''Best of'' but not just that, recently i picked up the most rare songs rarely heard of ABBA and i did a ''ABBA rarities'' tape, i also like some live performances and i do have several mixtapes including PINK FLOYD live,, but generally when i do a single artist mixtape i do use their best i like the most for my tape.

Way back when I used to make my own best of tapes. I would often included seldom heard cuts that I enjoyed from the album listening. I recall making Rod Stewart. Mellencamp and Eric Carmen mix tapes to name a few.

The best example of such tape I did is probably this one:

This the primary thing I do - making mixes of one particular group or artist. Usually my own personal ensemble of favorites which usually means "includes deep cuts" instead of simply going with all the obvious hits. One way I mix it up, and make the most out of available blank space, is to throw in a song - or two - or sometimes three - from a completely different performer, if the songs seem to "click" for various reasons. For instance, I have a mix of John Mellencamp spanning several albums and I threw in some Aerosmith, 'Permanent Vacation" cuts because they fit, sonically and conveniently because of blank space needing to be filled. It also creates a time capsule of my listening preferences at the time it was recorded. That's probably the most powerful thing about making mixes; they are a reflection of your musical life at the time you made that commitment to tape. A "dude diary" of a particular time in your life, if you will...

I will.

A good analogy.

I have of course, ripped out all the pages of my diary that reference Michael Bolton. There are some nostalgia trips that need derailing...

I have a copy and still play that one. Great tape. If you ever feel like uploading a FLAC of that one, let me know. I have a couple friends I'd record copies for if you wouldn't mind, and I'm not set-up to tape from tape to tape with very good quality.

You don't need dolBy B-C NR HX-Pro for that I guess....
Rumor has it that if you record some M. Bolton with Dolby S - HX Pro enabled, that the encoder detects his voice as total noise, thereby eliminating it, and the tape comes out ready for your next karaoke party...
