Who all in here can set up a TT from the start? How many are comfortable doing it? How many would like to learn? My TT gets here Friday. Either Graham or Jim can show us how or I can ask John to talk us through it. Do you guys know all the adjustments and the terminology?

It's been 20 yrs. Don't have a clue. If it came with instructions I could muddle through.

I hate doing it. There is no fudge factor if you want the table to sound the best it can. I even have a book. Guess I better break it out.

If I have a file saved in my Polyglot Of All Media No Caffeine folder I'll send it.

Me and headshell wires aren't so good.

I resemble that remark. :albino:

Follow the instructions. If you don't have any printed ones follow the ones in your head.

Mount the cartridge in the shell, connect the four wires correctly, adjust the stylus overhang, mount the shell with cartridge in the tone arm, balance the tone arm, adjust the tracking weight indicator to zero. Adjust the tracking weight to the recommended setting. Then if your TT has an anti skate setting adjust that to the recommended setting. Assuming you already have your TT hooked up to your pre-amp. plop on a clean record and start the show.

Usually it is specified in the owners manual. The two new turntables that I bought came with a gauge that you slid the head shell into. You then lined up the stylus with the end of the gauge before you tightened the cartridge bolts. and of course put the nuts on the bottom unless you like the Frankenstein look. Now where have I seen that before? :cyclops:

Here is some information regarding the VTA. Of course the adjustment would depend upon your TT. Best to consult your users manual.

I'm not so lucky. LOL Mine did when it was new. My MHs came set up. The Micro isn't new. What if you change pads and have to change the VTA? My overhand is either 15 or 18 mm.

That is about as much as I can help you as I never tried pimping out a turntable. :cyclops: I pretty much just kept mine stock and invested my money in a better cartridge.

I'm not pimping it out. LOL I just wish I could find a freaking manual. I have looked and searched every where I could think of. The owner says the tonearm is set up. I have the protractors for my MHs. I will try it. But I read some where the spindle is a different size on MHs. I just want this thing to be nice. I'll ask Jim and Graham to come talk about it this weekend. Is anyone going to show up?

I can and have set-up more TTs than I can remember,,as far as over hang another thing to look for is a mark on your headshell,,a lot of TT Mfgs would put a mark on the headshell to act as a guide with set -up,,, also I make sure my Headshell is level this can be done by using a mini level,,I use a Snapline level these can be purchased at any hardware store

The ends of the head shell wires are actuaully different or something and you can only put them one one way, is that what I gather? I always have such a bad time putting them on and I'm nearsighted like Magoo.

A pair of mag or readers glasses will help also I use a doctors clamp (or in my case a 60s roach clip) but i suppose a pair of fine needle nose pliers will work,,be sure to follow the color codes,,,FF

Quite possible as it has been awhile since I have installed a cartridge. The last few I installed had four different colored wires that corresponded to the colors on the cartridge. One the ones I installed the wires could be connected to any of the terminals, so check to be sure you have them wired correctly. As FF noted a small needle nose pliers comes in handy.

If the tone arm is wired correctly it should be: Left = white wire, Left Ground = blue wire,
Right = red wire, Right Ground = green wire. Best off to check a owners manual to be sure though.

You want to check the installation instructions that come with the turntable and or cartridge if you can find them. Otherwise just connect according to color code and let your ears be the judge.
