I have to take my Pioneer Elite C-72 preamplifier in to clear up a slight distortion coming out of the left channel. In the meantime, I pulled out an SAE 2100L preamplifier I had never hooked up before, but had sitting on the shelf for the past 9, or so years. I wanted to see if it would work well enough for me to use as a replacement for my C-72, while it was in being serviced. I tried it in the laundry room using my Pioneer SX-D7000 as a power amplifier. It was quite a chore to configure the wiring as the SAE preamp actually powers the speakers, so the power amp's speaker outputs feed into the SAE and the speakers are each fed from the preamp. I had it working for about 5+ hours today and it seems to be working great.
I don't know whether this would be an option for you, Dave, as I haven't checked the current pricing on an SAE 2100L, but it sure is something special.
And a little video clip of it playing today. Don't expect very good sq from my handheld digital camera, but it will give you an idea of it in action:
