I should have an assortment of resistors available in my shop. Can you guys recommend kits for general audio usage? What type, values and wattages do you recommend? Where is a good source?

I know it is kind of vague but the primary use would be tube and solid state classic amplifiers, integrateds, line stage pre-amps, etc.

Thanks,

I like to get my resistor kits from www.justradios.com

I have the 1 watt flame proof metal oxide kit and the post wwII 1% 1/2 watt metal film kit.

If you travel at AK there is a member that is selling sweet Dale 1%, 1/2 watt kits.

Mouser & digikey list them. Start with 1/4, carbon film or metal film as the budget allows. make sure to order through hole, not surface mount. Eventually add 1/2 watts and 2 watt. If they come in bulk bags (no case), buy one of the parts bin cabinets and put 5 or so values in each bin. I bought a complete kit many years ago and they came loose in one big bag. Took me a couple days to sort them out.

Just for laughs I bought a bag of 1/4 watt resistors from the auction site, and got 640 resistors, 64 different values, for $4.42 shipping included.
I haven't done anything with them...not recommending them at this time because they're so cheap and I have not evaluated them yet. But there are some stupidly cheap deals out there if you look. If you're interested check out eddiestore2008. It took a couple of weeks to get them here from China. But for the money I couldn't resist trying them out.
Oh, and NO AFFILIATION whatsoever, just a deal that I found, couldn't resist, and threw a $5 bill at.

When you get a chance give us a report on your opinion of the quality of these parts. Do the few you measure meet spec? Are they mechanically nice looking?

I didn't receive them yet. I ended up getting the last super-mega-colossal kit the guy on AudioKarma was selling. He is getting thin on several values but has a lot of others.

I'll let you know my thoughts when they arrive. If you are interested, I'd look him up ASAP before he runs low on other values.

Being in the business of repair for a lot of years, I just ordered 200 packs from DigiKey when they were $1.80/100 so I got a lot of 5% 1/4 watt resistors. The when I needed others I ordered extras. This is how you build an inventory of the resistors you are likely to need. To buy a kit of 1% Metal Film might take a bit of cash so I have not gone that route.
With 1/4 watt types you can always make a 1/2 watt or 1 watt with them.
If you need to make more than a 1 watt it can get messy so might as wel order a sandohm or Metal flame proof type.
