Was going to do maintenance on the Pioneer today. I kept stumbling over a CDP that is in pieces. LOL That is my story and I'm sticking to it. LOL

Alright I need some explaining to me. I am a tight wad. I work very hard to get the most bang for my buck. Why do people go for these big buck Otaris and Teacs and such. All that I have heard is they are a maintenance nightmare. I'm forgetting a brand right now. 1st they pay big bucks for the decks and then big bucks to get them refurbished. Plus I can't afford 70.00 for 1 reel of tape I record @ 15 IPS. Can someone give me the plus side of this?

Jim what did I pay you for my Akai? I bet I could fire it up today and it would play and it has been 2 years.

Seems like I'm in a confrontational mood today. LOL Not really I'm just joking around; but can someone answer my question please.

15 IPS is a waste of tape in My opinion maybe there,s a sound difference but it ain,t worht it 71/2 is fine an also you might want to do a music swap in the Future and a lot of R2Rs would,nt run at 15 IPS I guess the reason some people go for the big Buck R2Rs is because they can,,or have to have something to brag about,,or maybe they want what they conceive is the best

I remember when I joined a forum. Someone said they bought a real R2R it was an Otari. They got it and couldn't afford to fix it. Yea it was real alright. I am a tight wad. I want it good; but I want it at my price. I have no problem waiting for years till it is what I want at the price I want. I have wanted a Pioneer deck for about 3 years. I wasn't going to pay big bucks for it. I got one. I was going to get it ready today; but I sluffed off. LOL

In the last 2 years I have learned alot about fixing things; but I have a lot more to learn.

Last couple of R2R decks I have brought were less than $300. Otari MX5050 BII and a Tascam 42OB. You can be cheap and have near the best.

You are in a mood this fine morning, aren't ya? :D

FF is correct about 15isp, it's great for showing off, or if you actually record a live performance it's a must for best SQ. I have 'DSOTM' recorded at that speed on a TDK GX for special evenings. I use 7 1/2isp for everything else. The Fostex E-2 and Teac A-3340 4-channel were free and came with OM/SM's in binders, the Fostex works great, the big Teac needs some work (power cord was cut, and it needs NAB hubs)

Dale also uses a little Teac X-3 in his set up, and it hasn't need any major work since he got in 1980. And yes, thats a Directed Digital HD tabletop radio on top of it, but that's another thread  .

Like Graham said, you can find the good stuff if you're patient, Otari and ReVox are some of the best gear out there for SQ, and well worth the hassle. I prefer a nice cassette deck for conveinece, but a nice RtR is tits man :cherry:
