Please excuse me if i'm posting this in the wrong place. I'll be happy to move it if it belongs somewhere else.

My PL 4000 Ser 2 has a persistent and very high pitched tone with an odd "bird chirping" or cricket sound occurring in both channels. The sound is almost continuous and is primarily evident during the first hour that the preemp is operating, becoming less evident and less frequent, but continuing to occur randomly over time. It only presents when I'm listening to music through the preamp stages. If the music is coming in and going out through tape monitor I don't hear the offending tone and chirping. I tested it with an external source connected to Aux, and Tuner. I hear it through both of those channels. If i'm using the main outputs one and two. I didn't test on any other channels. The tone reminds me of one of the tones they use when they're testing my upper range hearing. It doesn't present immediately at turn on, but it becomes audible very soon after turn on. Say, within ten to twenty minutes and it's readily audible. When the sound is occurring, adjusting the base and treble controls does not affect the sound. Pressing all of the different equalization buttons on the preamp does not affect the sound. There may be a problem with the treble equalization overall. The high end sounds brassy and grainy. I've used two different power amps and three different sets of speakers to make sure the problem is not related to those components. I invite any suggestions for further isolating the cause of the problem, but would prefer to put it in a shipping case and send it to one of the technicians or engineers here for diagnosis and repair. Thank you.

Good morning, Sir, I have not opened the case and the dealer from whom I purchased the unit was unable to provide any maintenance or ownership history.
I know enough to be dangerous, but I’d guess you have a bad transistor (or several) based on the noise.
Thank you. That makes sense. I no longer own the equipment necessary to safely snoop around inside.

I can handle dangerous if you've got some time to schedule surgery on this preamp. I tried bugging Eric, but he has Model One orders stacked up for a while.

I'm Oh for Two with Eric and J!m. Are you amenable to taking a look at this preamp for me? And if not, perhaps you'd be willing to suggest another tron-wizard who is. Thank you.

Both channels simultaneously screams "component(s) common to both channels" leaving the power supply, and not much else. A cap breaking down and inducing noise into both channels could do this, or possibly a regulator. Per-channel semiconductors are not likely due to the the lack of commonality between channels, and also since semis rarely fail this way (typically good or dead . . . unlike caps that degrade over time ). If this only happens on certain input pairs (L+R), look to see what is unique to those inputs . . .
