Hi all,

Now that Mike has joined our forum, I thought it would be fitting to dedicate a thread to the Pioneer HPM-200 speakers he owns. I know there will be plenty of thoughts about them and I hope Mike can keep us up to date on his own. Any discussion about these speakers will be appreciated from all members.

Mike: Feel free to contribute any pictures you have or any details of your HPM-200, even if you have already submitted them in your introductory thread.

To kick things off, I have a few magazine scans:

Stereo Review - April 1977 - 4 page fold-out ad - view left to right:

Insert pages:

Consumer Guide - Stereo Quarterly - Fall 1976

I like your stands Brother and your system is awesome to look at!!! Just something about stacked Pioneer silverfaced equipment that raises the testosterone levels in men. It just has that no nonsense look coupled with elegance

As for Nando's ad, there is no way I would trust those speakers to survive with a 700B

Seems to me, Ron, a factory Phase Linear 700 B is featured prominently in the ad. I've driven my Pioneer HPM-150s with Larrt's WOPL 1000 borrowed from Doug. Mind you, I didn't sustain the amp at meter-peg-volume.

I am sure I was within the 150-200 watt peak range (according the dB scale) with your amp, Doug. And I could play a few songs in succession. It's captivating, but when it's a borrowed amp, I use discretion.

That's sort of what I meant Nando, I do listen at those levels daily and that would increase the chance of the amp hurting them. I agree it would we a great match for headroom at more reasonable volume levels. I am playing Crystal Vegas right now at near what my CV's can take for a sustained period (length of the disc basically). Even the wife tolerates it because there is no ear fatigue. We sort have learned to read lips in this household LOL

I love the approximate retail price in that ad, $366! That is awesome...

Now these speakers have me curious... :toothy5:

With the special "HPM" tweeters and supertweeters, do we have something similar in technology still around today? Is the sound they produce sound that is "unique" i.e. something to get used to? What happened with these types of drivers over the years - anyone know?

Not sure what's out there in this generation of speakers that mimics what the HPM-200 speakers had going, Jerry. Perhaps, Douglas would know as he has seen some recent speaker offerings at shows.

I remember thinking that they sounded real good .... and pretty cool stuff, innovation. But I have always been partial to Pioneer. That said I still have all Klipsch for speakers

Hello Guys

Well I am having, excuse my french one hell of a time upping photo's of the hpm 200's, I go to upload photos
via the online file upload manager and it grinds away for, and this is no exaggeration, 3/4 of an hour and half the time the photo's are horrible to look at. i suspect it my great Telus high speed connection here in Black Creek, :violent1:

I am wondering if anyone would be willing to let me email some pictures to them and put them up on the site. As soon as I have time I will be jumping on Telus once again and getting it straightened out but they are slow as molasses and it has been a problem for over 20 years over here on the dark side of the moon. I am virus free and very careful about computer security. Anyway if anyone wants to help it would be appreciated and yes I will take photo requests by the way. he he. :toothy5:

Thanks Mike

Mike, what's the average size (megabytes, etc etc...) of your photos ?
And how many photos do you have needing to be posted ?

None are more than 6.25 mb. and some are less than 6.00 mb. Currently I was going to put up about 6 to 8
with others to follow if people want to see more.

You should consider opening up a free Dropbox account. It's cloud storage. You can copy files up to the free space that you want
to share with someone else and then delete them when you like (once snagged by the other party). If you can manage to set up a
Dropbox account tonight, upload the 6 or 8 files to there and PM me the link, I'll post the photos in this thread for you in the morning.
Don't ever put sensitive sh!t up in the cloud, but for sharing photos that can otherwise play havoc with email servers, Dropbox or another
cloud storage service is cool beans. Box is another one out there. I've been using Dropbox for several years and it rocks.

Here's a referral link for Dropbox: https://db.tt/wk2yRyqA

Hitting the hay now, long day ...

Thanks for putting up the adds, I enjoyed going over them. I have to say that these speaker are very dangerous because they are so smooth that the volume just keeps
creeping up and your ears keep adjusting and it is only when you shut them off you realize that you ears have taken a pounding. for the first 10 months i had them they
were rarely below -10 on the Nad c390dd until one day I realized the ringing in my ears was not just from running chains saws for over 30 years.

Thanks for posting those pictures, Mike. I thought you might like seeing those old magazine scans.

Do you work as a faller? I work for Western Forest Products at the decommissioned pulp mill site at Squamish.
