We all know the Pl meters pretty much suck when it comes to actually indicating what is going on in real time. Of all the analog indicating systems I have seen the Spec series is pretty damn accurate, sooooooooo, what are the possibilities of incorporating a meter drive circuit to our beasties?? Here's the schematioc of Pioneer's meter drives.

Seems you want a peak hold performance rather than the averaging we get on the current meter scheme. Fast attack, slower decay.

Yep, that's what i've come to think as the correct response for an analog meter.

The ones on the Luxman M series were nice. They are really fast analog meters with LEDs along the bottom (green, then red after 0 db).

Also like the Mac meters. You can choose either watt, db (0 -10 or -20) and peak hold..

I have one PL 400 with clear plexi in front of the meters and another with smoked plexi. Anyone know why the difference or was that a "period" of Phase Linear 400 manufacturing? It seems the PL 700/700B are always clear.

Mark, I've had a lot of 400's through here, 50% were clear, 30% slight smoke, 20% heavy smoked.Never saw a smoke 700.

The ones with the smoke lens seem to be the four fin heat sink models, from what I have observed, so they must have been the 400 produced during the early years.

Skratch,
I had not seen that Phase Linear Service Bulletin, it is the only one I've seen that has the P.O. Box at the top. Does that make it older?

I think we need a thread to post the Service Bulletins. Most of us have seen the TO-92/TO18 Transistor Pin Patterns Service Bulletin, it was dated 6-76 (revised 6-81).

I also have a 2N5401 Transistor Service Bulletin dated 1-76 (revised 6-81), a XPL909/FPL909 Transistor Service Bulletin dated 10-81, an Output Transistor Service Bulletin dated 1-80, a 700B Protection Circuit Service Bulletin that is undated but listed as #7721, and a GES 97 Transistor Pin out Change Service Bulletin with no date and no number.

Are there others?

Sure
I have one dated 10-81, Subject: Retrofitting of Series II 400 and 700 Drive PCBs To Pre-Series II(Series I) Output Stages.

I agree with Mark that we should create a thread that houses these Service Bulletins. It will further the position of this forum as the #1 forum on the web for all things Phase Linear.

I got the meter data from Lee, I print everything out and put them all in a binder including all Joes stuff, very easily accessed.

Fast attack and slow decay, why does it look more like what my ears are hearing at the time?? If the PL's are true VU meters, then are true VU meters an accurate representation of what the ears are hearing, or rather their sensitivity to it??
