Does anyone have an opinion on the Pl Autocorrlator? I have read some reviews which indicate that it is a wonderous unit, and does a great job of doing whatever it is that it does. But, I'm not sure EXACTLY what it is suppose to do and if it does it or not.....Snake Oil? Make a difference in the sound of ...Lp's...Cd's.....what is the consensus??

This may have been discussed before, and if so, I am sorry...

Nope I have seen them. Don't know what they do. Oh man I just remembered I have to pack the pre for you. LOL

I try to keep as few things out of the signal path.

The PL 1000 was an early attempt at surround sound and did a superb job for what they had o work with. It also had a downexpander and rumble eliminator that to this day has not been bested. I have 7 of them in various stages of repair. There is an upgrade to the op-amps and power supply that help this unit greatly.
It essentially takjes the left channel signal AND DELAYS AND BLENDS with some of the righ and creates a back left and right. It then can accomplish the a,mbience feature.
They are amazing units and the 4000 was an attempt to integrate a good pre with the ambience feature, it did not come out that well and a stand alone 1000 is what I would recommend.

When I et caught up on the amps I was going to do a PL 1000 rebuild and upgrade thrread. They are an amazing addition to the system that does indeed add a "concert hall" or other similiar effect, the noise reduction section exists of a mirror or com[parator circuit that takes the input to the ideal waveform and removes all distortion like harmonics, a rather amazing little unit.

Wow....I'm even more confused now than I was. I think if I can find one for under $100.00 I may get one, and pass it around for everyone to try, and see what everyone impressions are. One the one hand, I understnd what the intent of the unit is, but I also understand that having the fewest interuptions in the signal path is the best. I also see the THD of the unit listed at .25%, so it's like a lot of other things ...subjective.

And which is still inaudible. You being a musician should know just hom many compromises are made in the recording process, and a Joe's new board shows, done right it's a whole new world. They typically go less than 50.00 and have had some with NO problems, others with lots, but when they are right there's nothing like em.

Looks like you were typing at the same time I was...or keyboarding...good to hear your objective thoughts. I think I may try to pick one of these units up at a decent price and then order the upgraded parts and see if I can operate on the unit..

So do you use two of them at a time to create the "rear channel" and another to clean up the signal to the front..creating the "surround" effect? Or do you use one and feed the tape out signal to a rear, or how are you useing them?

Strictly strereo mode right now, I would have to get home and see what the oter channels are, I may have it confused with the 4000.

Squidley's fighting. If it inclues some op-amps and some resistors thats probably the good one. If you've ever looked in one the number of caps will amaze you and most are axial, which can be replaced with radial.

Yes Larry, you heard 4000, LMOAO!!!!!

IIRC, it was Bob Carver's early version of the magic something?? What the hell was that preamp thing called? Holographic thingie...I've never played with one, but would be curious to hear what it does with the Logan's since they have their own holographic sound...get it Sutton and let us know :D

I'm surprised that Pioneer wouldn't have bought the patents or circuit designs, or intellectual property of Phase Linear when they bought the company. Unless Bob changed the design pretty radically, I don't see how he made a later interration. I see that PL did, as there are a few 1000 Ser II out there, so Pioneer did continue making the Autocorrelator..

The Seriesa II is a pale imitation of the series I, not worth bothering with. Totally different idea and not as effective.

I have a Phase Linear 1000 Autocorrelator Noise Reduction System, as it is called. I even have the owner's manual. The key to using this device is the setup. It is fairly elaborate but then you are rewarded with stunning silence during quiet passages and higher headroom that provides additional volume during louder passages. The real magic occurs when you get the signal input high enough. If you use the preamp "input" you have to really crank it up, otherwise it sounds like junk because the circuitry is not able to process enough voltage. Use the "tape loop" and then follow the setup to get the levels established (or just set both large knobs to 1-2:00 position and the "low frequency calibration" about halfway. Joy.

The PL 4000 was made to compete with the Marantz Quadrilateral and others back in the days (1970s). It was like two PL 2000s on a budget, with a PL 1000 thrown in for good measure. They were even experimenting with 4-channel FM stereo during this time! The idea never really caught on and in the 1990s the home theater market took off with multi-channel sound to go along with the movies.

Phase Linear 1000 Series 2 is better than the original Model 1 not worse.............

I don't understand how the Model 1000 Series 1 dynamic expander/noise suppresser can possibly be better than the Series 2 version. O.K. so I have not heard a Series 1 to compare it to, so there is that.

However, the Series 2 lowered the T.H.D from a really bad .25% to a very acceptable .05% as well as using a much better overall circuit board design. Bob Carver did this design as well, and everyone knows MR. Carver was a freeking audio genius.

He just cleaned up the noise that the Series 2 would add to any ones setup and simplified the much larger circuit board. Instead of the large plug soldered vertical boards that tended to crack, he used a much thicker and well laid out circuit design.

From what I have heard with my Series 2 equals much less noise in F.M. broadcasts, as well as noticeable improvement in D.R. It also really help out with older vinyl with mater tapes from the 70's. I'm a big 70's music buff and recently bought a Pioneer PL-7 in mint condition for $80 Looks and plays like it's brand new and not like a 33 year old turntable. (I swear the original owner barely ever touched it)

The Series 2 helps eliminate some rumble(Although the table itself uses a graphite tonearm with great isolation from the platter to the arm itself.) It also cleans up the highs as well as the lows.

Heck this Phase Linear 1000 Series 2 was well worth the investment as it can even improve upon some digitally recorded music on some, but not all CDs.

I realize that you had a Series 1 and found it worth while. Have you ever actually done A-B comparisons with the 2 models? I waited several months to find a mint Series2 and avoided the Series 1 after really researching what device would work the best.

I looked into the newer Pioneer model RG-2,9 and the EX-9000, as well as various DBX offerings that are still vey pricey, and this was the only component that actually works without just turning up the volume.

Ay other thoughts or suggestions about the perfect settings?? Thanks everyone :) Steve

Actually, no, I did not do any A/B comparisons and was relying on word of mouth, something I TRY not to do anymore, unless it's someone I know. Thanks for the review, thoughts, inpressions and test results are ever so welcome , what's that feller on AK say----"more data, less wank?"

Question about Pioneer EX-9000 VS Phase Linear 1000 Series 2

Has anyone used a Pioneer EX-9000 Dynamic Range expander?? I can get one fairly cheap, but it's a choice between a Phase Linear 1000 Series 2 for $150 in mint condition or the Pioneer! The Pioneer is all black which will match my other equipment but the Phase Liner seems much more high end!

I need some advice please! I was able to hear a friend Phase Linear and I posted how it sounded. It seems as though the PL 1000 Series 2 is in mint condition an it's selling very high. It's at $120 and the bid ends on Sunday!

I'm selling a near mint Carver C-1 that I bought as a backup to my main C-1. So it' basically a Carver C-1 being traded for the Phase Linear 1000 Series 2. I'll probably bid up to $200 to get the PH 1000 Series 2 unless someone can give me info about the PH 1000 that will force me to change my mind. HELP PLEASE :)
