I have two Phase Linear Model 1000 Series II Auto Correlators, and one series I.

I've had one of the 1000s completely rebuilt to factory specs, and when I hooked her up I got a buzzing noise when the auto correlator is engaged. Sounded like the thing was oscillating, adjusting the correlator knob changed the frequency of the noise. It was worse with a particular type of interconnect attached to the output - a coax cable with RCA cable ends.

I sent it back to the tech, and he was able to reproduce it with my coax cable and when he dropped the input voltage to 110v or less. So he replaced the voltage regulators, and gave it back to me.

All is not fixed though. If I turn the correlator knob all the way to the right, there is a buzzing. It's not terribly loud, but it's there, being added to the signal. As I turn the correlator knob to the left, eventually it fades out as the correlator starts working to reduce noise. This happens with the PL1000 as the only item attached to the preamp, or when a source is attached to the PL1000. It's slightly better when a source is playing through the correlator. Push the button to disengage the correlator and the noise goes away. And the range expansion is unaffected.

I'd normally blame the tech, but this is weird. I snagged ANOTHER auto-correlator series II and tried it on that system. The noise wasn't as bad, but it is still there.

Thinking it's the stereo, I tried it on the upstairs stereo, which is also on a different circuit in the house... and still there is some noise.
Tried it on the dedicated line for my basement stereo, and no noise. I tried it on the switched line for the lights in my living room, and no noise. I've gone through and unplugged all my major appliances, and no change.

The Series I has no noise on any stereo in any room of the house.

I checked my line voltage, and it's at 119v.

Any idea what could be causing this?

Charles.

You have any light dimmers in close proximity

If all else fails I would recommend contacting Dean Nissen (the last Phase Linear factory service manager at the Lynnwood Washington plant).
Contact me and I will forward you his e-mail and phone number.

There aren't any dimmers on that circuit. In fact, the circuit that HAS a dimmer is completely silent.

Note this happens with BOTH of my PL 1000 series II, so it's unlikely to be a service-related issue.

Your comment about a dimmer switch made me start playing around with the system and the fuse box... and guess what I found out? My living room and upstairs bedroom outlets are on the same circuit as the... furnace. Yes. The furnace. And when the furnace fan is on, I get a noise in my PL1000. Lovely. Soooooo I'll be crawling under my house to rewire that outlet. Sighhhhhh.

Instead of all that trouble, try a low-pass power line filter first. I've used them off-and-on since about 1970.

The PL1000 has the same crappy single rail PS circuit that the PL4000 has in it. Single rail op amps were used that had lousy PSRR so there is very little rejection of noise coming in from the AC line inside these units.
