Ralph Edward Stanley wanted to be a veterinarian when he was a young man. Instead he became the Doctor of Bluegrass.

Stanley's band, the Clinch Mountain Boys were the backup group for him and his brother Carter as the Stanley Brothers. Carter died of cirrhosis in 1966 and the Clinch Mountain Boys would become the inspiration for the movie, "O Brother, Where Art Thou"?
The band also had members over the years who were superstars of bluegrass and country music such as Ricky Skaggs and Keith Whitley.
Dr. Ralph continued to record until recently, his last album being released in 2015.
