I now own my 1st PL products, I heard this is a great place with good people from White Oaks. I have been involved in audio for some time but hoping to learn more from the PL experts here.

Welcome to our forum, Brett. There have been a number of Phase Linear projects that members undertook recently. What else have you got in your stereo system?

Nando.

I have 2 two channel systems:

1) Grounded Grid Tube Pre
Restored (2) Dynaco MKIII monoblock amp
Klipschorn

2) Emotive audio Erato tube Pre
McIntosh MC2300
JBL performance Series

Here is a link of the JBLs when I first purchased them, the sound is a little slow at 1st, give the song 30 -40 secs. I will also attach pictures

Nice system, man. We talk Klipsch around here, and we will talk you into a WOPL before it is all over......Bwaaaa, haaaaaa, haaaaaaa.............

Really nice system you have.......really nice.

(I just read that The Grateful Dead had 48 of those amps in their Wall of Sound system...man that must have been a totally awesome concert experience..)

I used to run the Klipschorns in kind of a quasi-bi amp up set up. I ran full signal from the pre to my Vintage Crown active crossover then separated the signal sending the highs to the Dynacos ( they are not the prettiest ) which still used the Alk crossover for the upper 2 horns. I ran everything from 100 Hz down to the Mac and let it roll off naturally. It sounded amazing!

I also had the upper horns replaced with all altec 511s which really helped. However, after going down that road I wanted to get everything back to stock and that's kind of where I'm at today. ( i used to be on the Klipsch forum all the time but got burned out ).

I really do like horns but they're very picky with gear, Lascsllas can sound wonderful with the 2a3 amp but in the end I went with push pull because of bass.

Also had a pair of bells for a while. Very nice speaker! I had the RF7s but they ended up just being too bright and to forward, never did the crossover mods to them.

My favorite horn speakers to this day is a pair of altec model 19s. They bested the altec 604s in onken cabinets by a long shot. I wish I still had these.

I agree that horns are very picky about the gear....that's why I love the WOPL"s , they've never sounded better. Had some Cary SLM 100's, and I wondered where the bass went. My first and last time with tubes...

A very nice pair of systems, Brett. The Altec Model 19s would be ones I would aspire to having. Love the video clip, too.

I bought a used pair of VOT A7 500's in 1971 then sold them for $500 (less than I paid) a year later for money to buy a motorcycle. First stereo shop I worked at in 1980 sold Altec and I took home a pair of 19's on indefinite loan. Way too big for the room I had so swapped them for 14's. I immediately popped those woofer VC's right out of the gap (only 1.5" on those things) then they went back too. Never had the room or since then the money for 19's but I thought they were a hell of a speaker. Always wondered how they would have compared to the A7 500's. They had 5 segment horns, crossed over at 500Khz and the 19's were 3 segment - 800Khz.

Bought mine from the original owner not a scratch on them. I ended up selling them for the JBL performance series which is a much better speaker, but I just have a thing for horns!

None of the places I've lived in for the last 3 decades has been big enough in my opinion, to accommodate a set of horns. I've lived with other mids & tweets for so long that whenever I've listened to a horn loaded pair, my initial response is that I don't care much for the sound. That being said, I have a box of EV components from the 60's with horn mids & tweets plus 3 way crossovers and some EV plans. My intention is building some 50's-ish style lowboy enclosures on legs but I have a feeling I'm not going to like them.

Prejudice before consideration.

I've got a pair of Model 17s (I think...with the 604-G or something) and a few pairs of A7's in storage. Just not up to the task for me..

Hello Brett and welcome! My Grandpa was an engineer at Quality Steel in the 1960's and I spent some time in your wonderful city as a wee lad, I love your system :compress:, and I hear ya on having a thing for horns, my thing is a thin piece of mylar between two charged metal stators :shaking2:
