Right on, Ben! The YT clips may not reveal how loud you are playing through the Crown amplifier and into your 901s, but I know from my experience with using a hand-held camera for recording, that is plenty loud. And the sound is clean, too. How good is it to wait until Friday night to break the Crown in? Congratulations!

Please let us know which songs were played in the videos.

Nando.

I have to say im pretty impressed with this amp. Price per watt I dont think this thing can be beat. Another thing, I got thinking yesterday afternoon, this is my first time buying a new piece of home audio gear. In all the years I have been around stereo's nothing I have had was new.

Song playing in the videos are,

Faith No More - A Small Victory

Volbeat - Gardens Tale
- Sad Mans Tongue

Buckcherry - Lawless And Lulu.

First 3 were on vinyl, and Buckcherry was playing from a cd.

After a week of listening and enjoying the Crown, I came to the conclusion that running the 901's with it was the wrong choice. Today I switched the amps around. Running my 800 watt amp to the 901's and the Crown to my Yorkville speakers. Much better balance this way. For example, previously wired, the gains on the AP800 were set to around 1 maybe 2 oclock to match the Crowns gain of full out. Even still the 901's were being over powered by the Elites. Switching the amps around allows me to run both amps full out with a better blend between the two. IMO the 901's needed the extra power, rather than the pro speaks. With that being said, the XLS 1000 is being driven a lot less than when hooked up to the 901's.

How does it stack up to your 1801's??
Well... if they worked... its no contest. The 1801's can easily out do the AP800. Without 901's the 1801 gives that big 901 sound. Dont matter what speakers they are hooked up to. It can easily pop the protection circuit in the Elites. At 400 watts each they can take a beating, but the 1801 is still a little much even for them. I would have to audition a 1500 to really compare the Crown amps to an 1801. All things considered... this will be a good amp to hold me over until I can get my 1801s out to Ottawa for repair from an AK memeber.

Tough equipment...hard to put a Yorkville down. Other than when an 1801 goes DC, or any amp goes DC for that matter. Ive taken out a few woofers in the Elites in the day. Other than that the speakers and amp are bullet proof. Been running them for years with hardly any issues. I need to have one of the woofers rebuilt though, surround is torn. I think they could both use some xover work too at this point.

Ben,

If money was not a problem, what amps would you go for?

New or vintage?

A stack of refurb'd 1801's...4 would probably do the trick. Especially if they were rebuilt in the Thierry Martin fashion. Although... money not being an option, I think I would have to try a McIntosh at some point. I would definitely have at least my 2 1801's running properly before I did that though. :laughing9:

Here are a couple vids after the switch. First one here is just the amps doing their thing.

http://youtu.be/GcbeFwCFNR8

This second vid, really shows how much of a hog the 901's are. Also it shows, how much less power is being drawn from the Crown not having it running the 901's. That being said, I did have to back the Crown down a bit to match the 901's a little better.

Thierry is an amazing restorer. His work is immaculate.
I agree. If only he didnt live in France.

I have spoke to the OP in this thread here. He has already agreed to resto both my 1801's, when I can manage to get them out to him. Most likely after Xmas. I have considered many options with these amps. Finding someone to do what I want has been a chore. My regular service tech operates under one of the larger TV/Stereo stores in town. Their policies make it sometimes hard to have something like this done through them.

Have you ever worked on an 1801 Lee?

No I haven't , but every thread I've read on them leads me to believe I can. The Phase Linears we work on are some of the hardest there is to get right, but with the White Oak stuff it's much easier. I say that because after getting somewhat proficient at the Pl repairs the Spec 2's, Brystons, SAE's, Spec 4's were just not intimidating anymore.

Hey Ben thanks for the link. I know you were having some issues running the 901's with the 1000. Did you try to disable the peak limiting feature on the amp? There are a lot of nay sayers on this product line that Crown has produced. IE like its not audiophile. (Not sure what that means exactly) but what ever. The higher up the chain has a lower noise floor. I bought the 1500 model just for that reason, as I knew I was going to run it as a stereo unit. It was never my intentions to run it as a sub amp. My Polk SDA2's are supposed to handle the amp, but my Polks will not take all the power this amp pushes. I have done the mods to the Polks as I am sure you have read about elsewhere, on another forum perhaps. Anyways I can hear the 6 1/2 cones straining at moderate listening levels and I have backed the preamp down some as I know there limitations now. I know my setup is not ideal running my amp off of an AVR receiver. But I am looking for convenience with a remote versus getting up every 5 seconds to adjust volume. Call me lazy. Maybe try the 901's with out the peak limiter engaged to see if that makes a difference. Its quite simple just follow the manuals instructions. Its all there right in the front panel control. No need for a screwdriver.

It's nice to see you join us, Robert. I recognized the amps from your TH avatar when I mentioned it to Ben in another thread, here.
