My Monoprice wire (real copper this time!) arrived some time ago, and I finished the bi-wire connection yesterday, using all banana connectors. I put it together carefully and came off the "Front" speaker connections. I put on a CD. Nothing. Tuner. Nothing. I knew the amp had been off the whole time I did the speaker wiring, but I panicked, thinking I had cooked the amp somehow - went upstairs, had a Coke, and began trouble shooting in my mind. Went back downstairs, rechecked the speaker wiring, and plugged in headphones - they sounded so good, I made a mental note to listen more that way. Then I remembered --- I had turned the gain down (with the remote) on the unused center and surround channels. Without thinking, I did the Fronts too. OK, run that back to max - music!

I then listened to some music I was familiar with, and was hearing detail I had never suspected was there. I played around with some of the spatial effects, and they make quite a difference even with two-channel use - there are about a dozen. I have not even addressed things like input trim, which enables you to make all inputs play at about the same level. I've never had an amp with such a learning curve! The sheer sound quality is worth it, however. BTW, this amp, I have learned, was Yamaha's flagship amp when it was new in 1993, and won at least one award.

42 pounds, no rack handles, many obsolete connections (S-Video), and I think I've put more copper into the speaker wires than it has in its own power cord. It's so complex, it worries me - my amps were always so simple before.

I'm back to simple, using the Yamaha as a two-channel power amp, controlled by the Acoustat pre. The Acoustat has buttons for input, a knob for gain, another knob for balance. I put it into the system to check it out with a view to selling it, but...

HOLY COW!!!

I'm still not believing how good this sounds - it's almost beyond words. I listened to a percussion track by Radio Tarifa, and there was snap and solidity and and and dynamics. Every little (and big) detail was there, along with channel separation. In a word: eargasm. The Yamaha even sounds like it has gobs more power on tap. Now I have to PM the prospective buyer - sorry! Sorry!!

I'm sure it's not in your house, but I just meant the industry has moved on to HDMI. In a few years, they will surely prod us into buying a whole new generation of NEW! IMPROVED!! cableature.

An update: I took the Yamaha out of the system for a while, and reinserted the Aiwa monoblocks - had a wild hair to swap the Yamaha for a subwoofer amp. Bad idea. The Aiwa's just don't measure up, and sound nasty when pushed hard. They are rated at 80 watts input, so even bridged to mono, they can't have a LOT of power. Put the Yamaha back in, and I think it's in to stay, barring the unlikely find of a better amp. The first thing I listened to was Pink Floyd's Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and I had never heard it sound so good, or so dynamic. I think all the gear I now have are keepers.
