One of my Polk SDA's started acting up a bit. I think it's the tweeter rattling a little, so after a long search I decided to go with these guys at Midwest Speaker. They have been making a drop in substitute for the Peerless Polk tweeters found in many old Polk speakers. Figured I'd give them a shot first since they were about 5 bucks cheaper than ordering from Polk directly, and seems to me that Polk started to chintz a little on manufacturing replacement drivers.

Sooo.. stay tuned... when I get 'em in and start listening I'll post a review....

Why didn't you go with a peerless? Is the one they make a peerless?

Larry
The Peerless either isn't made anymore or is the one Polk sells direct. From what I have researched, this copy of the Peerless works and sounds great. We'll see how accurate that is when I get them in.

All I have free is the one from 10 or 11T I think, the rectangular one with the silver wire thing. Slight dent in the dome, sokay. I have a stray Monitor 4 with a different woofer (6402?) and it rocks as a single. The SQUARE tweeter, the better one I understand.

Well I got 'em!

Gotta be careful with the tweeters you order for Polks. Depending on the year and model, there are subtle differences between one and the other.

With the replacements I got in, one thing I missed was the position of the lead-in wires in respect to the mounting holes. The originals have the lead-ins positioned in a straight vertical line down the middle while the replacements have the 45 degree "angle-in" on one side, probably those designed to fit horizontally versus vertically in the 2B's I have.

But.. ahhh.. no biggie. Did a little bit of drilling that's hidden behind the plates, so I was able to get the replacements in.

How's the sound? Really good! Nice, smooth, and clear. I do see what others were saying about the 12K "bump" that the originals have, tho. Basically there's a good few db's rise right around 12K, which makes the originals a little bit brighter. That's either good or bad... depending on tastes. The replacements are a little bit more subdued, but it's still a sound I can get used to.

Overall, good buy! I'd recommend these if you're handy with getting them installed, and depending on your Polk model you may not have to do anything.

Got some more listenin' to do... !

Sure is. I get an added bonus when I have old parts I can give to my 7 year old to "explore". Tonight we had a lesson about Morse Code when playing with the old tweeters, a pair of wire, and a 1.5V battery. :santa:

Lol that sounds like fun. I would have used a arc welder, but yeah he is a 7 year old.
Heh.. actually "he" is a "she". I'd like to get her interested in tech-type stuff when I can. Get 'em interested and learning at an early age is a good thing.

Anywhoo. Yeah, the tweeters are working good in the SDA's. If I had anything to complain about, perhaps it would be the "vibe" I got from the seller. One of those "I don't have a personality" types. Had to ask for feedback too, but heck. Can't fault the overall transaction, and something in the back of my head says "stop being a wuss" even if I felt I was corresponding to a brick wall... :bootyshake:
