Hey folks, have John over, played my fav Patricia Barber, damn if it didn't start skipping, I'm beyond upset...what should I do??

I could play it on another deck to make sure it's not the Onix acting up...

Breath on the back or use a wet towel and try cleaning the reflective side. If that doesn't help try another cd player to determine if it is the player or the disc.

Wash the disk in warm water and some mild dish soap. Blot dry with a soft, no lint, cotton towel. Do not wipe in a circular motion! If your player does it on multiple CD's the head is likely dirty.

Mine does it too Stu if the laser head is dirty. Get one of those cleaning discs. Works for me.

True, but the new Onix CD-15 hasn't skipped yet. Haven't even had to bungee cord it in the rack.

BrawHahaha! I remember you're old CDP strapped, swingin' from the bungee's :bounce:.

The track was ' Black Magic Woman', right at the part where Ruben Alverez is gettin' down on the double/trip bongo beats, it goes AWOL, John said "Hey that's some cool shit"...I have to say it did enhance the sound/beat thang, I'm going to record it just for the hell of it. I tried cleaning it and it's still happening, not really any visible problem on the surface. This is a special promo Cd from 'Blue Note Records', I don't think I could replace it, Lee, I might need a copy of your copy dude.

If the CD skips at the time of the Bongos start up and the speakers are not set low, the vibration may be getting to the player- back it up some and play the speakers lower. If this is the case you need more isolation for the CD player.
If it skips on a number of discs at that same time position it may be dirt in the worm gear or a dead motor spot. Depends on how old the unit is.

I have had a customer bring me a certain disc that at track 7 would skip while all other discs would play fine. So I looked with a scope on the Technics unit he was using and the EFM or RF would decay down to about 60 percent of the regular sized signal at that point- he said the disc had been returned 3 times already and they all did it. So it is possible to verify with a scope at the RF test point on a player to see if the disc is at fault or defective. Sometimes they are.

I played it on two diff players and it skipped in different parts of the same song, the volumes weren't very high to my ears...but, I like to jam this tune!!

Could it be that the production was a bit too much for most transports/lazars?? This disc has some serious energy!

Lee, thanks for bringin' me some copies, I need my Pat's!!

Sam, I'm soooo far from being a tech, I have no idea what you posted but, I thank you. This is a treasured Cd, I'd rather have the Lp version but, as those are selling for over $200+ , I don't see that happening soon

I may talk in technical terms but when a group of people work with high tech items then it becomes necessary to learn the terms that go along with the use of the item. Then there are the terms that go along with why a disc will not play properly.
If you know a person who has a scope, knows how to hook it to the RF or EFM point in any open CD player, they can examine the disc to tell you if the item is defective. Chances are if the disc skips on the same song on different players- especially those better players like the Sony ES line with linear skate pickups, then there is a good chance the disc was pressed poorly and has a defect on it- some of those defects are put on my users though.
Oh, Those defects on an optical surface have to be large enough for anyone to see if they are scratches or damage caused by the user- if the disc looks perfect then there is something wrong with the way it was made- the scope RF (eye) patter amplitude will tell you what you need to know.

Stuwee, I don't know what type of computer you have or what type od optical disc device, but if the disc is damaged sometimes you can copy the disc and burn to another disc and get rid of the skipping on the new disc. To a purist this might not fly as some of the data that can't be read will be interpolated and written to the new disc.

Then again it may be a slightly damaged disc and your players sijmply don't have the ability to correct the defect on the fly. I know I have had some finicky discs, but since I have a multitude of players I can get one to play it flawlessly.
