Completed restoring my fathers one owner Nakamichi BX-300 tape deck. He purchased it new and has barley used it over the years.

It's suffering from a weak idler wheel and will not turn the take up capstan.

Replacing all belts and idler wheel, as well as a thorough cleaning.

It's for sale if anyone is interested, send me a PM. I'm going all digital and have no need for an excellent tape deck.

This was the main culprit... Along with the other belt in the background.

That was the easy part... Now the rear belt.

All back together and working perfectly

Thanks, it's a very clean deck.

Spent it's entire life in a cabinet mostly unused and this is the first service performed.

I've considered keeping it just to be able to play a tape if needed in the future.

There's that, or the need to keep a 1995 4WD Suburban stocked with cassettes. I keep my Nak around in case I find such a Suburban in good shape.

Looks very nice!

But I already have two Tascam 122 Mk. IIIs that Sam went through and a Nak 670ZX with sticky meters (otherwise fine) that I've not even powered up.

Oh, and two Kenwood KX-1030s- one restored by ESL for play only (corroded Dolby chip legs prevent noise-free recording) and the other looking corrosion-free but unrestored. Oh, fully re-capped and mechanically restored Sony D5 too... probably should sell that... maybe sell the Nak too...

Idler wheels- what a pain in the sphincter!
I have a Pioneer CT-F850 that needs the same surgery, dread the breakdown to get to it.
My Dual 1229Q needs to be worked on, too. Haven’t decided which nightmare to tackle first.
