I've ended up with a Nakamichi BX-300 cassette deck. From what I've read it should be a pretty nice deck.

The deck does have a few issue I was hoping maybe someone here could help me out with.

With a tape in the well none of the functions work. You can hear them trying to go but it just does not happen. With no tape in the well the FF will work but the Play & RR will not work.

I've had two opinions now from talking with friends that it's the idler tire and maybe the belt.

Does this sound correct to you Nak pro's out there? If this is the case I believe I can handle to repairs.

Any and all thoughts and suggestions will be appreciated.

TIA!

And if it does have gear idler and not tire, someone discovered that just after ordering the idler tire. And the problem was related infact with a dead spot in the idler motor.

Oh right, ive heard of problems with the motors too. Pretty sure you can de ox it but it wont last long... just prolonging the inevitable.

There are threads on TH about these issues.

Yes, a full restoring process of that motor it's prefferable and if too worn better replacing it,, well just in case.

Not sure I want to get that far into this deck.

I thought I read all BX-300's are idler tire? I thought I saw it in there after looking at the SM. I could be wrong.

I believe the earlier models were different. One of the guys on the other site mentioned after a certain serial # they were changed..... around 15,000 if i remember correctly.

Infact you may be right, looks like the gear idler system it's an upgrade made by many just because the tires are not lasting so long, and who knows if you have the standard version or the upgraded one, you must check first.

That's good to hear, Paul. Did you repair it yourself?

Nando.

Paul: Was it difficult to do and was it only the idler tire? I moved too slow on an available deal to buy a Nakamichi 682 ZX. My buddy sold it to another friend of his for $200. He does have a nice BX-300 available for purchase for $150. What do you think of yours? This two-head BX-150 of mine is a good deck.

It was just an idler tire.

I like mine but then I've only listened to almost one side of the Twisted Tape.
