This is one of the 3 pieces that was "pick up only" in St. Paul. Gotta say---pretty damn cherry. Faceplate immaculate, rack handles-the best I've ever seen, knobs have some marks....

Got around to opening this puppy up. Except for a little dust, it's like it came off the factory floor. No marks on any of the internal fasteners. The finest example of this breed I've seen, so it's getting the AP treatment to get some baseline factory stock measurements....

Measurements done. Now it's listen time. Sounds pretty damn good for a stock unit...

Is the 400 a fully comp unit? Nice looking pre you picked up - the amps you scored on this take also look quite nice. How does the 2000 II stand up to the 3300 II?

Yep , that's the fully comp beta tester. VERY clean unit. If the 400 and 700 look that good, i've been blessed. The 2000 is noisier than the 3300. The 2000 has less components, the 3300 has modern op-amps, the 2000 has the 4136 and 4739's. The brown dog can take care of the 4136, the 4739 is a bit more difficult. Every time we try to sub it with anything different it wants to oscillate. Joe says it's because of phase lag in the newer op-amps. It can be fixed but it's a major circuit rework. We'll tackle it soon, just not on this unit probably.

Thanks Lee. Reading a previous thread it seemed that the 2000 was more of a pain to upgrade.

Working the 400 hard enough had to fan it. The one glaring difference is the 2000 noise floor is greater. Idling with no input it's audible.

Even though the 400's and 700's didn't have the low bass response, the pre's did. Not losing much bass between this 2000 and the Spec 1.

Lyle, all this heeds is the pots cleaned(wayyyyyyy scratchy), new electros and a Brown Dog in place of the 4136 then she'll be good to go.

No more ceramics in the phono stage or line amp.

Recap is done, brown dog in place. De-oxit the pots, solder em back on and then button it up.

The original faceplate is so cherry I'll use my spare plate to make the pot alignment and solder opration. Don't want to chance anything with that facep[late. It made it 40 years without being scratched......

Thank you Jani for the detailing tips. The process will come in handy should I get something in need of a thorough clean-up.

Nando.

Everything lined up and finish soldered. Time to test...

Jani's faceplate cleaning process-----

I was going to try that on me but I became a little concerned about the Sonic Scrubber Pro Detailer with a blue pad part. :confused2:

Thanks Jani for the detailed instructions. I'll give it a spin - on a faceplate that is.
