Luxman "Suckface" Repair

A Luxman RX-102, of Jani's, does not "Suckface". So , tore into it and the main drivebelt from the motor to primary gear was off. Seems like a relatively easy fix, but things are not always as the seem..................................

I have to fab a half circle copper strap spring. With a notch on each end to activate the switch contacts in the right order. Instead of touching two contacts as the cam rolls around it has to "Make" with the contacts that the common contact is moving away from. In the first pic is the broke switch. In the others is the same switch in the "Suckface" cassette player. The half round copper strip kicks the middle contact "Down" as the black cam follower is pushed "Up".

If you eventually repair the switch, Lee, and I'm sure you will, there are many other Luxman owners out there who have the same models experiencing the same problem. I bet the replacement switch is NLA and has been for some time.

Time for the 3M 2216 structural epoxy. My "go to" adhesive for stuff like that.

Why is it your "go to" epoxy?? I'm using Devon 5 minute, and the plastic cam follower did adhere very well. Gotta work some today, got another blizzard coming tonight and want to button some things up. Will fab the copper strip when I get home.

Yep I had a few suck faced components about 15 years ago that wouldn't suck either. I finally gave up on them and sold them on ebay.

Yes, it's a very common problem with servo face Luxmans. You did mean Devcon, Lee? That stuff is so strong my dad used it on a cylinder block to true the surface on a 1969 2000cc inline engine. After a retighten of the head bolts after a break-in period, it is still holding compression. The alternative was a used head for over $1K.

Yep Nando, forgot a C. It's always been good to me. I thought it might tighgten up the response of the cam follower, but after separating it from the base mount it has very good travel. This may work. The only other alternative is to take the cam point off the gear and make an indentation so the switch would act as a normal microswitch there.

And the hold down screw is for a #3-56.

It is an industrial strength epoxy Lee, not like the cheesy 5 minute epoxies they sell in blister packs. The stuff flows well, makes a neat fillet and really holds.

Well, the fab is over. The big question is , is there still enough flex/travel in the plastic part to deflect the switch contact the right way.
