Sonic nirvana is hard to interrupt.
So on the sacd, when you rip music to your library off a standard CD does it upsample at the higher rate then file it at that rate too?
Well, I'll rip it at the same rate and density as the original. But during playback I have the option in my player to upsample at any rate.

I also "suspect" that win7 is doing some sort of upsampling of it's own. There is a definite increase in SQ over XP - one reason why I won't go back to it anymore (XP).

Re: So let's make a crossover

So how do you sort through all that stuff and how do you control what actually happens to the music once the computer sucks it up??

I just do it the old fashioned way. Make folders and subfolders on a hard drive, then rip... copy.. paste.. move (whatever) the files around. Then just use the "search" in windows explorer to find what I want to listen to if I can't remember where I put it... I use a player called "foobar" that has great sound quality to begin with, and is completely KISS-compatible (seems every other audio file player started out "ok" but grew into big bloated pieces of crap). Que up all the files you want, randomize it.. repeat.. whatever..

Here's a quick peek into a portion of what I have. Helps to have a nice big drive too...

Re: So let's make a crossover

Sure.. that's plenty to hold quite a bit of music. Using FLAC compression (lossless.. which means you don't lose a bit of the "bits" like mp3) at a decent rate will run about 5 to 6 megs per minute of music, little bit less. Easily fit over 2500 hours of music on one disk.

If you use a decent ripper like that EZ CD extractor I was talking about to Larry, then you can set it up to automatically look the artist, album, and track info up on the internet .... make all the folders (like by album.. artist.. however you want)... and extract all of the CD into FLAC format all at once... takes about 3 minutes using a fast computer CD drive.

Re: So let's make a crossover

I can rip and burn in about 3 mins. It is fast.I'm the slow part.

Jerry you might ask Danny to design your crossover. You tell him what you want. He plugs in all the parameters and whala a x-over is born. He knows the tweeks and things.

I'm lost, xonarst??
That's the soundcard I was telling you about. Once you have the files on your hard drive, you need a decent soundcard to play them with. The ASUS Xonar ST is some serious stuff when it comes to that from what I have read so far, but I'll definitely know in a couple of days when I get one in and try it out.

That's actually your "DAC", if you think of it that way. 124db SNR, .00003 THD, 10 to 90K response, nichicon FG caps all through and through... serious stuff. You run a regular pair of RCA cables right from it to your preamp.

It's getting clearer, thanks for your patience.
Sure thing. Yeah, I'll tell ya all about the Xonar tomorrow when I get it in here. And hey... also.. if you want, I can send you either the MAudio 24/96 or EMU 0404 I have to try out. Either one of those should still give you the idea of what kind of sound your 'puter can put out.
