If you change a laser do you have to do specific adjustments to make sure it is right? If so how do you do them and where can you get the info. I'm bidding on a Theta Data Universal transport that used a LD transport to play Cds.

Any info would help.

Hi Larry,
I have worked on a lot of CDP as you called them and the older ones need a lot of adjustment as well as the Pickup or Optical assembly comes with a solder bead closed which you have to take off to get the unit to power up- it is static protection.
Then there may be the Focus Gain, Focus Offset, Tracking Gain and Tracking offset. There are other adjustments if they are there- they may not be easy to do if you do not have the proper tools. The new ones these days have servo circuit that all you have to do is put the Pickup in and make sure the mechanics are aligned correctly- like the lens to disc distance specification or the platter distance to pickup. If the Disc can not be focused on they usually will not spin up. Then when they do spin up you have to look for error that occur in the eye pattern at both the inside of the disc and more importantly the outside of the disc where rotational wobble and variations are the greatest. I have had units come in that play the TOC, and first half of the tracks and could not deal with the outside. Also check the disc player with a long play disc that are more difficult to read.
