We have been wanting a TT that is just simply plug speakers in! It doesn't have to sound like a 15ips Studer but definitely helps if it can sound better than MP3s streamed on bluetooth to a boomy JBL/Bose.

I found this and also the model 20 locally. They both seem to have the same tone arm and cartridge(Pickering V 15). A local record shop owner tested the 717 says that the cartridge is in a good shape, manual mode/FM/ speaker Amp work.

Are these a step or two up from Victorola ?

I'm on the fence regarding doing upgrades for every stage. Install a much better tone arm and platter, swap the Amp etc. Basically gut it out slowly as time allows. My options for something like this modern are between a $100 Victorola and a $2500 Andover and they look like my 2.5 year old made them.

I'd probably just get a cheapo audio technica turntable (they have built in phono preamps) and a $20 class D amp off of scamazon. Or you could go the crosley rega route lol

The issue with old all-in-one units is that once they start having internal issues, it may become a brick as the old parts were obsolete 30 years ago and "modernizing" it will cost more than used separates.

Remember: even then, these were built to a price point...

But they don't look as retro cool though ! I'm totally down to gutting this Model 717 and installing a new table, Tone arm etc. Most of these use an AC motor and they are usually bullet proof ? May be change the tone arm and remove the changer system completely? There's plenty of room for activities .. a new Purifi stereo module ?

Perry may weigh on this thread.

Don't know about the size of the hole where the turntable is, but a period correct Dual (like a 1215 or 1219) that's been restored would look good there. And I kind of like the idea of replacing the amp boards inside with a class D board of some kind. Could be fun.

I have a soft spot in my visual heart for the Sherwood 7100/7200/7300 receivers from the early-mid '70s. Thought once about taking the guts of my Exposure integrated amp and fitting them to into the Sherwood, retaining the tuner section and getting something very retro looking but sounding up-to-date. I can see that happening here.

A friend offered a couple of dual TTs. I will compare this obscure 717 with the popular model twenty and do due diligence before cutting and grinding. Also, this 717 was re-badged as a Singer Model 925.

Model twenty is definitely heavier than Model 717 btw!
