Finally after a couple of months, got me PLWO up and running again. Sounds REALLY good. Here's what's been done..

1. New DC Protect PCB - Old ones were eating too much current from the main PCB, these have their own PS and 48 volt relays. It also cuts out immediately now, since it's driven right off the secondary.

2. Upgraded C6 - Better bass response.. I can definitely tell the difference there!

3. Front pots bypassed - Input feeds direct now.

4. New beefier bridge rectifier - More current handling.. good stuff!

Here's the DC Protect PCB.. mounted on the side of the chassis..

Shot of the top... bigger C6's there...

LOL now that is better. Can you tell I'm in a good mood? What did you upgrade the C6 to? Where is the C6. I know its a cap.

Errr.. ya'are?? HMMMMM

Listening to Mistral Wind now... the later live version (circa 2010). Swear I could actually hear the dudes in the audience talking .. GOOD STUFF!

Larry, I sent him some 470uf 50 volt Nichicon "Muse" for C6. that is Joe's recommendation for the improved low frequerncy response, and yes it makes a BIG difference.

A hundred hours seems to come to mind. I'm not sure though. So that is why I'm asking. I know the BGs take a while like good wine. They keep getting better.

C6 was 100/100, now it is 470/50? I just happen to have some of those...
Will this be a permanent change to the PL14/PL20 Main Board? I don't see any downside.

Yes Mark, that was part of Joe's "Optimization" of the "Universal" board design. He hasn't cut loose with the rest as he' not done testing yet, BUT, the low freq response improvement from just that is VERY NOTICEABLE. I usually run the Spec 1 tone controls with +1.5 DB at 50Hz, and + 3DB at 100 hz. After the cap swap I brought those back to flat and was tempted to subtract some, nice tight, CORRECT bass.

Larry, I don't recall ever seeing a break in time published for the "Muse" series.

Thanks, I was adding bass as well. Most of the 1970's era amps tried to emulate a flat response and our ears do not hear "flat". That is why every preamp of that era had "Equalization" or "Loudness" controls. I will make the change right away. Things that are better and getting even better.

Good Work Jer. :thumbright:

The first time someone mentioned PLWO I thought it meant Palestine Liberation World Organization? :cyclops:

I just today received these:
