Webb has an open design; its mirrors are not guarded by the kind of tubular baffle seen on other space telescopes, such as Hubble. Instead, the reflectors sit behind one giant sunshield that allows them to maintain the stable, cold temperatures needed to detect infrared light.
not only that, it is out at L2, and that is far more exposed than Hubble in Earth orbit where the shuttles could reach it. Hubble has Earth for a shield
Gotta keep it up and running. The government just announced that Arecibo will not be repaired in Puerto Rico. Granted, it's a radio telescope but they got a lot of use out of it. Jody Foster and 007 were there so it must have been important.

It looked much better when I was there in late 80’s and again in 2000. First visit I got to see that pick up horn being repositioned. Much louder drive system than I would have expected. There is a video of it’s collapse floating out on the inter web.
