A buddy of mine just scored a B-1 Vfet and UC-1 preamp, the B-1 seems to have a rabid following, but the outputs are unobtainium now, so when it blows it goes  , it's in need if a recap, even though it powers up and works. Should he just use it as it sits? Pay for a major overhaul?

I say he should pay for the recap, and find some nice, detailed speakers that won't tax the output stages. and hope to get many years out of it. But what do I know :ugeek: ??

The UC1 is a meter. I would disagree that the B-1 needs a recap. Yamaha used primo parts in these. He can plug it in and try it. Do not use a variac to soft start it.
If it does not work I can repair these.

Oh, I can see that now, http://www.canuckaudiomart.com/details/ ... cessories/ , I should have said the C-1 preamp and UC-1 meter, his writing style confused me. He's been getting conflicting info on line from folks because of the age of it I guess. I'll let him know what you said about the quality of the parts used, that's kind of what I thought too. The best of the best, and still one of them today. Thanks Tom :thumbright:

The C 1 may have intermittent connections. Mine does. If his B-1 has meters on the front, then he does have a UC-1 too. The B-1 by itself has a very simple front and only runs one pair of speakers.

I sent him an email and asked for some pics since the ones in that Canunkmart ad confused me, it looks like the C-1 had meters on it too, that's a lot of meters for a system. I'll find out.

The C-1 has peak meters too! They are not as sexy as the Sansui Ca 2000 meters. The C-1 has more buttons and flexibility than any other preamp! It has full dubbing for 3 tape decks!

Tom, he just mailed me back, the B-1 is meterless like you thought, he and the Mrs. are leaving for vaca now, he's very excited to hook it all up when he gets back, and that if there's any problems he can send it to you to get right, he's probably gonna keep it, I'm dying to know what he snagged them for, he's not tellin', stringing me along...bastid

I bet he got them cheap knowing him, he also got some nice Altec Malibu's in the deal, big mellow monsters from 1968 or so :D

I'm not sure how the B-1 behaves with tricky speakers, but the Altecs are an easy load. We used B-2s at Anderson Audio to drive DQ-10s with subs, so on that basis the B-1 should work on anything that is not an electrostat or ribbon. I think it wise to be conservative and keep the amp running forever. Mine has run DCM Time Windows forever.

I love the Time Windows, very nice!! They have some new lines out, the Time Frame series, someone over at CP bought some and after having to fiddle with the placement a bit thinks they're fantastic, http://www.dcmspeakers.com/news/stories/tfe_05.htm
