Hello all, Goggle1824 here, figured keep things simple with the same username from AK.

Learned about PL and the Phoenix Community through all the lurking and reading I've done over there.

Hoping to get started with a WOPL build project to power several different pairs of vintage speakers I've acquired over the last 12 months or so.

There is so much info, registering and saying hello were my first steps, how do I go about deciding which PL chassis to pursue?

Thanks, looking forward to the journey.

I think all but the very first PL400 can be upgraded, including the Series II. Same with the 700, including the 700B as well as the Series II. Look for one with 8 heat sink fins on the back. One guy on this forum did a Dual 500, probably the most adventurous undertaking as far as any restoration or revamping goes.

Caveat: I'm not the expert, but I know that there's only a few that can't be done.

Mark, only the original PL700 can't be WOPL'd. Any 400 can, that would be where I would start Bill. Welcome to the board, things are a bit looser here then on AK. Sort of like the audio version of CHEERS

Welcome Bill. Glad to have you over hear. Navo will soon give you the proper welcome as well.

As Lee says, cheers! This is a very friendly crowd, although we are very diverse, we have a good time and keep it light.

Hey Google - welcome to a fun community!

You're choice of Phase Linear chassis should depend on your budget and the speakers your plan to drive. The 400's are more plentiful so the initial cost is cheaper. The upgrade cost of a 400 is a less but I haven't done the math on the delta between a 400 versus a 700 upgrade.

Here's a Nav welcome babe for you - she'll get your dragon to fly.

Thanks guys.

Many thanks for all of the welcomes guys, appreciate it.

Nav, woah, that's a dragonfly worth being interested in!

From my reading so far it seems like the 400 is a good place to whet the old appetite with both Phase Linear and White Oak mods.

The current "collection" of speakers includes: ADS 1920/2s, EPI 202's, Genesis Physics I & II's, Whardfedale W70, Rectilinear III highboys and a pair of original JBL 4310wx.

Went maybe a little overboard over the last 12months collecting these but the prices were good and I have a hard time saying no to a "deal". :sad7:

Music tastes are pretty varied but I'm a kid of the 70's & 80's so Van Halen, Aerosmith, Hendricks, Clapton, CCR, etc., also enjoy as veg-out music including the Dead, Phish, some Dave Matthews, Ben Folds, Billy Joel, etc. Basically I enjoy music that impacts me emotionally, it feels like it's one of the last areas in today's world where so much political correctness, corporate BS and butt kissing need not apply :violent1:.

ANYWAY... Again, appreciate the welcomes and hope I can add some value to the Phoenix community!

PS - thoughts on good preamps to pair with a 400?

I use a Perreaux SA3, Carver C1 and a Kenwood Basic C2. Other folks here like an Acurus also. Choice of preamp needs to meet the super low s/n ratio of WOPL and for folks that dig spinning records, has to have a killer phono stage

APT Holman's are nice preamps but usually require a complete extensive recap, Danimal1969 just did his I think but says it does not sound right???

No....I got time. You know me - always changing my mind. Keep perusing until a deal come up I can't turn down. I do kick myself for losing the Acurus, it was mine and I just hiccupped.
