The Creator brought me a special gift on this birthday.
I went to pop in one of my favorite tapes to spin up this big day, in the original 870ES "twin"
and low-and-behold no play action. FF and RW were cool. And with the squeal that accompanied the
aborted play action - it could only be one thing:
Mode Belt.
No not the easy main belt. No! Had to be the tediously effin' Mode Belt.

Luckily I'm experienced, and have a few OEM belt sets waiting in the wings.
I love this mechanism. The main belt is a piece of cake. Almost as good as birthday cake.
The
mode mofo is a tricky surgical expedition if you're new to it. It really should be done
in a complete dismantling of the mechanism's structure but if you know the short cuts
and take your time, it's not all that bad.
So in the end, God throws me a reminder that we don't last forever.
Not even our decks or their belts.
Twin #1 got the royal treatment today, with both belts replaced and a tidying up of the cabling.
Just checked out functionality with some DCFC pre-record.
(Death Cab For Cutie)
The main belt was stretched a tad and the mode belt was shiny and loose. Typical wear-out condition.
I snapped it ripping it out during surgery ...
