Stuck in the 70's
#1
Hi everyone!
My name's Dave and I'm a retired ee in the middle of Michigan. Originally from Long Beach Ca.
I got into audio in the early 70's when I worked at Radio Shack, and I've been into music my whole life. Classically trained on trumpet, when I was 16 I decided I couldn't become a rock star on trumpet so I picked up the guitar. About 40 years later I found out I couldn't be a rock star on guitar either!:toothy10:
The last 5 or 6 years I've been getting back into putting a nice system together and I've acquired some nice equipment, starting when I found a Pioneer SX-1250 sitting on top of my across the street neighbor's trash on collection day. I got over there and grabbed it, and I still can't believe that actually happened. I've since rebuilt it and it's in really great shape. I'm into equalizers and expanders...currently a dbx 3bx and an SAE 2800 parametric eq. Last week I finally bought the speakers I've wanted since 1980 or so, the Dahlquist DQ-10. I just finished refoaming the woofers and I'm going to install them this morning. My other speakers include Boston A200's, KLH model 23's, Realistic Optimus-7's, and Klipsch KG-4's. I always wanted some Klipsches but I found that the horns aren't my cup of tea...
I have two Phase Linear 400 series 1 amps that have been recapped, and I am trying to order DC protection for them but Don must be on vacation. I want to get one of them driving my new to me DQ-10's because the SX-1250 is on the edge of it's ability when I crank up the volume. But I'm really reluctant to put the PL 400 into service until I get some speaker protection.
Ultimately I want to get a BIG amp and I've always lusted over a 700B. So I'm here at the suggestion of Lee, who is a friend from AudioKarma.
This is a great looking forum, full of great information and people, and I hope that I will be able to add to it, not just take away. That's about it for now, and I look forward to meeting you all!

Hi Dave,

That's a great introduction! Lucking into a Pioneer SX-1250 receiver that way is incredible. The Dahlquist DQ-10 speakers aren't ones I usually hear about, so it will be interesting to hear how they work out for you. I, also, use a compliment of dbx gear in my system. I have a few other processors, too.

Welcome to our forum!

Nando.

I guess not everybody can be a horn afficianado. I just hope your exposure to horns were a really good set.

Just some stock Klipsch KG-4's...I have heard some Klipschorns that were incredible though.
Thanks everyone. I feel very welcome here!

Hey Pre+,

Glad you stopped in - welcome to Phoenix. I can't help but notice that Michigan is a long ways from Long Beach and it's positioned in the cold region.

The 700Bs are eye candy but don't factor out other models as they will do you right if you're not stuck on the B model. With that said if I run into a good deal with a 700B I'll jump on it for sure 'cause I like that style.

Welcome! Lot's of Phase Linear fans and restorers here. I am sure that just about an question you could possibly ask will be answered here. I hope to snag a dbx 3BX myself this coming year, great equipment. I have a dbx DX5 cd player and I would not give it up for anything, really make my 400 jump and makes cd's sound very analog

I love my dbx gear. The 3bx is really cool, and all my systems have one. I've got 3 Phase Linear 1000 Autocorrelators that are very nice too. One of them I have completely restored and sounds like new. The other two are in need of some attention and on a shelf in my lab.

Well shit - when you upgrade/modify the next PL 1000 you'll have to post a thread here. We like attention.

The 1000 Series I Autocorrelators weak spot is the solder joints on the mother board connectors, and the switches. When I do the next one I'm going to see if there are lower noise spec'd transistors and IC's that might be substituted for the originals. Except for one IC that was bad, replacing all the electrolytics, resoldering the mother board connectors, and cleaning the switches got my first one working great.
There is a page of mods that someone did, but I left mine stock. One of the coolest things about the 1000 was it's transparency.
They are cheap at auction, but be prepared to replace a ton of caps. I think the peak unlimit board alone has around 35 of them.
Here's a link to the service manual.

I have 6 left waiting to refresh, one of these days. I agree, cap city in there. Did you find audio grade axials or did you stand up some radials??
