Audio buff since the 70s

I was delighted to find Phoenix. Never thought I would find a forum with so many Phase Linear fans. In 1975-76 I purchased a brand new PL 400 and first a PL 2000 Preamp. Returned the preamp 2 days later and swapped it for a PL4000 it was quieter than the 2000. Any way that's the one the salesman had demo'ed along with a 700b but could not quite swing the $s for the 700 and settled on the 400. I had also purchased a pair of ESS Heil AMT 3 Rock monitors from a guy for (org. owner) $400 as new price then was $499 each. I was hooked. This is basically the system I had heard at the Audio store (HIFI Buys). In the late 80s I sold all the gear to a friend of mine who used it for several years and put it in storage. Two years ago I was able to get ALL my orig. equipment back. The PL400 is in for full resto at a shop here in Atlanta called Modular Electronics. I have been doing a lot of reading over on Audio Karma and had become a fan of laatch55 he really seems to know his PL in and outs and glad to find him here.

Welcome aboard!

Time to get the WO upgrade stuff and do it right! Blows the stock rebuilds out of the water. If your 400 is a Series 1, have you considered the DC protection board?

Yes, there will be WO upgrades, probably Pwr supply caps and their boards. Yes it is a series 1 but the later version with 8 cooling fins not 4.

Just remember this important tip:

Audio in the buff is okay, but never REPAIRS.

You will do well with the Peaches (or just the Significant Peach) as long as you obey this rule of thumb.

I have too many neighbors and not good enough curtains to be an Audio Buff.

Welcome to our forum, Wayne. Undoubtedly, if you have Phase Linear gear you eventually would have trotted our way. I find it astounding to hear you ended up getting your original PL equipment back. That doesn't happen often. I bet there are many of us who wished they had held on to their memorable vintage gear.

Stuck in the 70's

Welcome to Phoenix...You're in the right place if you love Phase Linear...and we know how to take the very good stuff that Bob Carver designed and make it truly great. I'll never need another pair of amplifiers besides my modified Phase Linear 700B's. They put out...well, we call them WOPL 1000's here. The ones with higher-than-normal voltage power transformers have rail voltages in the +/- 110 volt range, which makes them capable of 500 wpc. The things I've done so far to mine are the White Oak driver boards LED meter light boards (terrific products), new output transistors, and the DC protection circuitry. The latter will save my speakers in case of output transistor failure, and the former make the amp sound truly incredible. There is also a conversion kit to make the amp fully complimentary (they're quasi-comp as designed) but I haven't made that jump yet. As they are, they sound better than any amplifier I've ever heard. Phoenix is a small community of dedicated, good people that has quickly become my internet home. We'll treat you right and won't steer you wrong. Again, welcome!!!

Welcome to Phoenix Sir....
We may have. I have been a member there for 2yrs. My user name there is "Greeter". I did have long discussions with Automojo about my Ess Heil speakers. If you have not heard ESS AMT3s they are astounding. By the way I like your Cat - the one that helps you at your workbench.

I could have had him in on the toppers for some Tempest Classics a year or so back if I had gotten enough time and knew that at the time...that auction house is closed now as well.

I eventually got the Sony TC-K4A cassette deck from that auction at one of the secondhand stores here as the owner won it, got it for only $10. Yes, it too has to be torn down, cleaned and belted, now that I have the time and room to pace the house without tripping. I was thrilled to finally get that deck as well, it's just plain SEXY and matches my STR-4800SD!
