I came home from an audio meet with three tuners which were part of other deals. I didn't really want them, but they were shoved in my direction. Here they are:

Nikko Gamma V - It does not work - tunes but no output of audio. (good cosmetics, original box)

H/K TU911A - It works, but has minor issues. (good cosmetics, original box & manual)

Onkyo T-4055 - It works, but has a missing switch and loose knob, and needs a good cleaning. The sound quality is very good, cosmetics only good.

Pay the shipping and they're yours, or I'll trade all three for a good tuner.

When they shove the Yamaha T-85 at you, call me right away :)

The Onkyo T-9090 is another you want to be watching for amongst the Onkyo tuner bunch.

Gepetto, if the day ever comes when someone gives me a really good, working tuner, it will be announced in a "Score!" thread, not a "Free Tuner" thread.

A tuner is the least used piece of gear in an audio system ive ever owned. I have only ever had the 1. It was my old man's, he bought it new about 20 years ago. For the most part due to lack of space the tuner isnt even hooked up, also partly due to the lack of radio stations in my area.

In places with a plethora of stations, mine are used a lot.
When i was in Toronto last weekend, having beer in the hotel room before the rock show. I busted out the clock radio, you couldnt even make the slightest adjustment without skipping over stations. Id love to have that kind of variety. It would definitely see more use thats for certain. Where im at though, basically 2 stations, rock and easy rock. I generally listen to the rock station all day at work, its very repetitive, has a lot of useless chatter, and not the greatest format ive encountered.

My modified TM-1001 is used all the time as well.
I had a TM-1001 for a long time, and it was one of the best I ever had, including a Magnum-Dynalab FT-101. I'd buy another. How did you mod yours?

BTW, I suspect the whole problem with the Nikko is a dead op-amp in the output - sound likely to you? It should be an easy fix.

The TM-1001 is a great tuner. Build quality is only so-so but the sensitivity is great and the sound is superior.

White Oak Audio has a combo replacement power supply board and audio output stage that improves on the audio quality that I have installed in mine along with the White Oak LED illumination board for the meters. It is where we started before we moved on to the Phase Linear amp upgrades.

You are probably right about the Nikko, likely and easy fix.

I took a look at the White Oak site and tracked down what they had for the TM-1001. Nice! If I still had mine, I'd pull the trigger so quick...

It's time to start keeping a serious eye out for one.

SUCCESS!!

Everyone:

"Success" is a word I don't often use in relation to audio. There I was with a problem tuner, and my favorite repair shop was some 900 miles away. None of the suggestions given to me were doing me any good, but the one about bad output RCA jacks got me to thinking. Maybe I could see some circuit gap in the bottom of the board. I flipped the tuner over, took off the bottom plate (easy, all the screws were gone), and had a look.

What's this?! There were some circuit traces repaired in the power supply section. I looked closer, and saw that one trace had been skipped. A nice gap! OK, grab the soldering tools and some wire. A few minutes later, I had the gap bypassed with some solid-core copper. Flip the tuner back over, power it up, and tap the tuning switch. FM stereo! Yay!! :toothy10::toothy10::toothy10::toothy10::toothy10::toothy10::toothy10::toothy10::toothy10::toothy10::toothy10:

Thanks to all who give help and/or suggestions, especially Orange. Thanks, Steven!!

Great work, Dennis! Now if you can send me shipping costs on that Onkyo PDQ so I can get it out of your way...:)

I just can't seem to make an end to this thread. Steven asked for photos, so I'm posting photos, including innards. It was a lot of work late in the evening, but enjoy anyway. BTW, with the Nikko working, I think I'll give away my Luxman R-5030. The amp section needs some TLC (dirty pots, and not easy to get to) but the tuner is very good. The usual: claim it, promise shipping costs, and it's yours (Steven gets first dibs). The more I move out of here this fall and winter, the less I'll have to take to Alabama next spring.

EDIT: In photo #3 and #4, note the dual power supplies, one for digital, one for analog. In photo #4, note the green wire I soldered in - all that was needed for a fix. The other trace repairs were done by someone else.

Looking at the Luxman's service manual (hifiengine has it) I'm almost certain the faceplate might need to come off but yeah, it's not the best thing to get the ideas from their limited exploded diagrams. This looks to be about the same vintage as HK 330i or just before, without looking it up and it's Chock Full O' Parts. One STK on a certain board that I noticed...man, the parts list is longer than a Harold Robbins novel, with more plot!

Dennis, if you just cleaned those pots up good you could use it in your camper/trailer/RV, if you have any and it would be a good set with small speakers. My hunch of course.
