After having to sell the beloved Pilot console (not to mention the Martin Logans...the stumiester was just about tapped out emotionally, then outta the blue my 74 year old auntie Berta calls..."honey, I have your Grandfathers Zenith radio, it's perfect, just plugged it in and it works very well, not a scratch, he whispered in my ear,,'please give it to Craig',, so my darling, it's yours".

Shit fellers, I remember this baby, similar to the pic and link, TOTL back in the late '50's early 60's, we'd twiddle the dial hear all kinds of cool stuff, but, the best was that nice tranistor smell from the early era of them, my grampa said they do smell different than tubes but, I'll show you why someday...that never happened  , I'm very happy to have this piece of history back in my life after all this time (I thought it was given away long ago). Pic and info from the net.. http://www.abetterpage.com/transistors/ ... h1000.html

That's cool! I once owned a Zenith Transoceanic tube version, looked a bit like a Forest-Gump suitcase, worked perfectly.

I'm doubting you'll part with that now as it was your Grandfathers. It's nice to have something of sentimental value like that.

Joe, ya have no idea, it'll never leave me home, ever!! The Pilot was a hard to let go, this was something that was always in the back of my mind 'where'd it go?' kinda thing, I think Orange aka 'Steven' had something similar and I remember thinking I know what that was about...

I can't wait to get my grubby paws on it again, dang, the memories alone are just the shit!! that smell, of the early transistors warming up, does anyone else have that orofactory sense of smell, or am I a freak?? (FF and Web can refrain please). The battery compartment is clean, it was well taken care of, the fold out map stuff all intact and mint!

I have a 7000-1 that came with a station list card from KMEO AM-FM

Some assembly still required

A 10D1 radio-phono chassis sans phono LOTS of assembly required and an incorrect but matching flooor cabinet needs TLCASAP

H 7_7 AM-FM clock radio (either the 14 or 19V disc tube? is out, HUM in the fm)

6D-030 AM wood set, late 40s?

H471 Circle of Sound, AM/FM digital clock radio

My SW comm set was a Hallicrafters S-118 Mk II and maybe I'll get a Realistic DX-160 doo from down the street.

It's wonderful that you were thought of when it came the time to pass it along, Craig. Congratulations.

Now go DX 40 meters!

I gave my Son a Tube transoceanic built in 1945,,,I also have 4 Us made Transister Transoceanics 2 thousand series and 2 700 parts units that I never got around to fixing,,,believe it or not the japanese versions of the 1000 series were said to actually work better that the US made ones

I need the concentric knobs for Royal 880 and since Mom put it in the top kitchen 3 YEARS ago and figured I'd find it, never look there don't use it, the battery pack mind melded with the C cells!

That set sounds great and has excellent battery life. would love to play it again.

Re looking at the pics again, it might not be the 1000, but a later model with more features, I don't really care either way, just glad it will be mine very soon. I really don't want to join yet another forum to use it. I no nothing about SW radios, it's just to listen in on conversations right? I know it doesn't transmit, anything else??

FF and Steven, ya's got some cool stuff :reindeer:

Hey Stuwee,

Short wave receivers were (are) a lot of fun - my father (he's a retired EE) built a short wave radio kit (my B-day present) that I used for a number of years and could listen to stuff not heard by most of us as this technology was used by a small minority of people here. I helped in the build by sorting the resistors by value (desending order) using the newly learned color code and sorting the caps by value - had to read the written values and use the secret decoder ring. I was facinated by this and maybe this has something to with my present state. My recollection is that I was ten or eleven when this receiver was built.

Wow - I can't believe that I found the receiver from my childhood but here is a link to the past:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... true&rt=nc" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I have recently read that after the wall fell (Berlin) the number of countries radiating in these bands diminished as the Eastern European countries were assimulated into the west and through time other mediums became available that are now use to dissemenate information. There are still a number of countries using this medium to get information out to others but new technology has taken a toll on this low tech but very fun technology. From my perspective I'm thinking you could have some fun with this.

I spent many an evening listening to the broadcasts from Vietnam and heard the other side's perspecive (a lot more propaganda than us) so I'm still questioning - why did I join the army?

Have fun with your new toy!

Because , despite recent events to bring us down, America is still the greatest country in the world, and you knew that or you would not have joined. We lost one of our sons last August from a self inflicted gunshot wound. He had done 3 tours in Iraq as Force Recon 5th marines out of Pendleton, a 4th as a Guard in a transportation Co. As long as America continues to field and nurture men like that........we'll be OK..
