I have several of the Hitachi external drives built for laptops. The laptop drives are powered directly from the USB port and require no wall-wart transformer. They are also small enough that they can fit in a shirt pocket. They are quiet, and have pretty good access times.

I have always had very good luck with Hitachi drives, they even replaced a couple that were zapped by lightning even though I told them it wasn't their fault.

Hitachi is now Western Digital (acquired several quarters ago). I have an external WD 1TB drive that I am very pleased with. USB 2.0 connected and wall wart powered. Rugged case.

I have one like this though not sure what model. Actually I have two. One is always hooked up will all my music files and a bunch of other stuff. The other on has my entire pc and the outboard drive backed up on it. Figure if anything happens I just take the other on out of the box and I'm ready to go. I update it often.

I got these at Target on sale a year and a half ago. I think they were about $65 each.

I ended up with a Western Digital 'book' 1 TB more storage than I need by far. It is 3.0 USB but backwards compatible to 2.0.

That is what mine looks like too Jim, a book. I got mine over a year ago on closeout somewhere. It is slower than your new USB 3.0 one but it is still plenty fast for my backup requirements.
