So after fixing Rex's EMU 0404, I decided it was a pretty good idea to upgrade my sound card and bought one of my own. Now they also come in the PCI Express flavor, so that was an added bonus. The PCI Express version (probably the newer PCI as well) now comes with a full EMI shield to cut down on any interference.
Great sound, and as an added bonus it has no issues with Win 7. It comes with a very extensive "patch panel" app. I doubt I'll ever use all those features, but it can do "studio work" if desired. Sampling rate goes all the way up to 192K, but really 96K is good enough for one "absolute I can't tell the friggin difference at ALL" recording session.
Compared to my M-Audio 24/96, I would say there's really no difference in output quality, when the M-Audio isn't running under Win 7. The M-Audio Win7 drivers are terrible, with buffer underruns resulting in an unusable output, especially when recording. If they had decent drivers, I probably wouldn't have felt any need to upgrade.
The EMU comes with 1/4" phone jacks for analog input / output. For digital, it has SPDIF in's and out's, both optical and coax. All good stuff there.
Here's a "shot" of the patch panel app. I'd take some real pics but can't find me camera at the moment...
