Van Vliet, known to listeners everywhere as Captain Beefheart and renowned for his distinct and unique take on blues, rock and jazz as well as his equally famous artwork from the 1980s on died from complications of multiple schlerosis Friday, December 17.
His 1969 album Trout Mask Replica, was produced with the help of Frank Zappa and became highly influencial in music circles but Don himself never sought to be mainstream, never was and was important to many others in proving you didn't need to be.
At the end of his life he was equally quiet and just as important as an artist and his gallery announced his death.
He leaves a widow after more than 40 years of marriage.
Even Dr. Demento played him. That's a big compliment.
