Grrrr, last night I was without cable internet for three or four hours. Called the azzwipes at Comcast to see if any outages or issues in the neighborhood. Of course they tried to get me to jump through their hoops of resetting my modem. rebooting my computer etc, even after I tell I have tried everything on my end and it is either the modem, their wiring or their DNS server.

According to my diagnostics the DNS server was not responding, but of course according to Com cast they said they had no issues, yeah right. I could connect to my own network but couldn't connect to the outside world. They wanted me to clear my browsers history and clear my cookies etc. even after I told them my network card could not connect.

Anyhow, they then scheduled a technician to come out, but it wouldn't be till next Tuesday and of course I did what I always do, go out and take the dog for a walk and try again in a few hours, and of course like all other outages which happen two or three times a year, when I got back from walking the dog my computer was connected to the outside world again.

Now I just have to figure out the easiest way to call off the Comcast dogs without waiting on hold for 15 minutes. :rabbit:

Did I mention I hate Comcast? The internet speed is phenomenal for what I pay, but it is the two or three times a year if goes down. I wish I would have kept the business card from the last comcast technician that came out. He told me if I ever had any issues to call him directly. He also told me he could sell me any upgrade cheaper then Comcast lol.

Just remember that they are clueless and they think that everyone that uses their wires is clueless too.

It was probably the 'Comment Crew' from Shanghai China hacking in on you :)

Yeah more than likely a "we aint gotta problem" but they really did fiasco.. been through a few of them myself.

One BIG help is being a member at "dslreports.com" (http://www.dslreports.com/). I've been one going on nine years. The comcast forum has a lot of good info, and usually I just check that first for other reports of problems in my area. Lately they have what is called "comcast direct" - which is a group of real comcast techs that can (and have) help you where calls to their support line have been futile.

I think there call center is in India. Once after waiting 20 minutes on the phone I heard an Indian accent keep saying I can't hear you, and of course I could hear him, and about 10 other Customer Service agents in the background. I had to hang up and jump through all the computerized telephone bs again.

Hell, better signals than I have, John.. Just one thing tho - if your area has been upgraded to Docsis 3.0, I'd be looking into another modem that is 3.0 compliant. Reason being is because your bandwidth would be spread across multiple channels, with some areas also doing multiple channels for upstream. Less congestion, if that's any issue right now.

Well since the modem is free from CC I don't have much choice unless I buy one. I don't really have any congestion here as I have lots of Seniors living around me who only use their bandwidth for Emails. My speeds are about 23mbs down and 5.5 mbs up and I am happy with DL speed. Usually the only bottle necks I run into are from the sending end not being able to keep up with me. I stopping bringing in terrabytes of data a month or so back becasue I don't want the wrist slap from my reluctant ISP.

If you can recommend a good modem I might buy one and toss the current one in the drawer for backup.

Can't go wrong with these Motorolas. (Nowdays... when the first model came out with a "funky" firmware on it, it kept rebooting on ya for awhile until it was able to grab the latest boot code from comcast).

I have the SB6121 which is what this one replaces, and it's really rock solid.. except when I accidentally bump the power strip it's on.. :rabbit:

SB6121s are solid. I've owned one going on 5 years - paired with Comcast.
Paying to own one out-right beats the pants off renting one from the ISP.
Always have had better than the advertised connection speeds with my
"own" modem. Be careful with those SB6141s; there are a bunch of them
in the retail channels that are recirculated rental units & B-stock and that are flaky
as all get up!

Buy the SB6121, Good cable modem. It pays to own rather than pay the Comcast rental fee.

I'll take your suggestions and think about it, but I don't pay any rent on a modem as mine is grandfathered in from my original Time Warner Cable agreement which for the price includes the modem. Every time the speeds increase I get the benefits without paying anymore.

I think I am currently at the 25mbs speed level for about $40 per month. I think there is a bandwidth slowdown at 250gb per month, but I have never noticed any slowdowns.
