For a long time I thought digital was just digital. No biggie. And then the light bulb went off. Then I found what a DAC is reclocking and a few other tricks. Sort of wish I had never found it out. Would have saved some money.

Digital is not just digital any more. LOL

So you still doing anything with SACD Joe? I have an SACD player in a box somehwere. I just never saw that many titles available, and I didn't want to buy everythin in yet another format...

Larry, tell me about DAC's...How much money to get into a decent one without breaking the bank, and does it make THAT much difference? Gotta know...

Yeah I wish there were unlimited titles on SACD Sutton, unfortunately not everything is available on it. I do have quite a large collection and SACD sounds significantly better than CD, even MOFI recordings. It sounds much more phase coherent than CD, like vinyl recorded from all analog sources but without the background noise that comes with vinyl

There are a lot of titles available but not everything.

Here goes. I passed around one once. Ask those guys. I still believe in separates. I have a lot more money in CDPs than I do TTs. It did improve my Grant Fidelity CDP. I heard things I never heard before. I haven't tried a DAC on the Shanling nor the Onix. I have a Parasound sitting here also. It has its own DAC. The Onix blew it out of the water.

I may hurt some feelings here. You get what you pay for. You can still buy cheaper and get improvements in your system. Depending what you are trying to do. If you try to go cheap in the end you will spend a lot more money. I'm not a person who plays music at 120 dbs. As to brands. If I see something I'm interested in I will save for it. I read about it then I will wait.

Sutton I don't know what to say.

I found that whether it's CD or SACD, single-box or separate players, the first stop is a quality analog output stage.

What brand DAC are you using? What attributes are important and what is not important in looking for a good one. What might be available on the used market, or what has potential to be great with some modifications? I'm just trying to get a feel for how much money we are talking about, and what you get for the money. Does it rally get that much better than what we already have? Is the DAC in the Onix not a really good one? Is there better?

The Onix has a great DAC on board. That is what I'm saying is if you step up to the plate. A good CDP is going to cost you big time. It is best to bite the bullet. I like the transport way of thinking though. Shanling builds some great CDPs.

You can make a CDP sound very good with a DAC. It will step a mid CDP up to another level. Names I hace Audio Alchemy I use sometimes. The one I use all the time is a Perpetual Tech. DAC and anti-jitter and reclock. You can get AA DACs off of ebay. The PT I fell into.

There are a lot out there that aren't expensive. You have to pay attention to power supplies. Start shopping. Anyone else know of some good DACs and such.

Larry, it's great that you found what you liked and wanted. I've got a Pioneer CD File player with 100 plus 1 capacity, it's almost full and buying a Sony 200-disc player would have been silly as WHERE am I going to find that many more? That's most of what I own.

I started in 1990! I sure do appreciate the player though...

I hope I get the order memorized.

Sutton, be prepared to spend a couple more grand to get something that sounds better than tghe Onix. Then I think the law of diminishing returns kicks in there somewhere.

I've got 1 1/2 sheds that are mostly full of what I once found working and countless trades and sales.

I didn't take 30 years to get there, that's all.

I'm not going to spend that kind of money for a DAC, I totally understand the law of diminishing returns. It would appear to me that "the best DAC" from maybe 5 years ago, which probably cost a grand, is about what is standard in the 29 dollar DVD player that WalMart is selling today. That is the problem. Stuff keeps getting better and better, and cheaper to make, so depending on where you jump in, you're going to get burnt..I don't know that I have bought a single NEW component or piece of audio gear in the last 15 years...Everything has been DIY components parts (or kits), vintage, used, refurbed, or been something I can upgrade....
