This guy had made some small Real Time Analyzers a while back that were pretty cool. He sold a few on eBay. See his other videos.
This one is possibly a replacement for bad VU meters. Take a look at this 90 second video of his new digital VU meter.

I contacted him yesterday (he's in Romania) asking about the size of these things. Here's his reply:

Hello, the board itself has 92x48mm and the lcd active area is 71x40mm. Depth of the unit is 14mm.

Roughly 3.6"x1.9" and 2.8"x1.57" Depth would be .55"

If these boards are anything like his previous RTA displays, he should be able to serve up about any color combination. I asked about how he's connecting this to power and audio source but didn't get an answer to that.

I'm pretty sure he'd do custom work but communication may be a challenge.

I was always partial to those "magic eye" vacuum tubes. There were two types- one that had horizontal readout and glowed at the ends. At the peaks, the light moved from the ends and overlapped at the center. The circular variety had a "C" shaped display with the peaks of light meeting at top center. Now those were cool!

Some Pioneer car units have the option to change the screen to digital VU's .I have a Riders Chanalyst I thought about doing something with . .It has 4 magic eyes and I read you can use as a radio .
