DAT to CD.

Some may know my Dad passed on in June. He used to write and sing country music. I found a master DAT in his closet that he has done up back in 2000. I would like to convert that and have a few CD's made. Anyone here do that or recommend a company that does it? Thanks.

I think Nando has a DAT player and could probably dump to CD for you as well. Best to ask him.

I can go from CD-CD analogue "files" to CD and digital files to CD, but I have no DAT player. (I did consider it when they were new)

You may be able to pick one up for short money- often less than a cassette deck!

I can do a DAT conversion, but I would most likely go from DAT (using my Tascam DA-20 MKII) recorded to CD-quality digital files using my Tascam DR-05 Version 2 portable digital recorder. Then you can burn CDs from the WAV files.

That has been an issue Nando. I have the CD's from the master DAT that the studio made however they will not read/play in CD player.

I might be able to read the master CDs if you want to risk sending them to me.

I suspect they never finalized the disc, so there is not TOC and therefore it won't play in a normal player.

My Tascam and/or Alesis may be able to digest it, and I can make a bit-perfect copy that is finalized for you (assuming this is the issue).

Have you tried the CD in a computer, and open each file?

I have many of the CD's so sending one or more would be no problem. Thing is I am unsure what is on the DAT tapes I have. Not sure the same things are on the CD's and I would really like to know. Thinking that I will go ahead and look for a DAT player now because I am finding more DAT's that were made up. Really do not want to buy one from eBay to be honest. They want like 250.00 plus shipping and I know nothing about them. I don't trust one to be in decent shape buying from them and being I have two, three DAT tapes to listen to/possibly record, I think you know where I am going here.

I'm not sure if Sam can overhaul the Tascam models, but it may be worth an ask. One of my decks came via eBay and I had it shipped straight to him to save some shipping cost... Just check with him first as last I knew he was buried in work.

The issue with DAT decks, as Sam will tell you, is the condition of the rotating heads, as they are unobtanium. If you find one with a decent set of heads, they'll do what you want to do. The other issue to watch for when burning the CDs (in addition to them not being finalized, as Jim mentions) is the protection software in some of the older CD players may not allow uncopyrighted discs to play.

I have CDs from several local bands that won't play on my Sony SACD player because of the copyright protection circuitry. It is pain in the ass.

Funny you say that because that is something I have noticed in the past. The cheap CD players play burnt discs no problem and the expensive ones well hit or miss. A lot of miss. And yea, that sucks. Good thing is though back in the day CD'S came out I didn't have a lot of money to buy the more expensive players so my cheap players would play some discs that some of my buds with burnt CD's and higher end players could not so it made them think I put some Voo Doo on my players. I let em think it too. HA!

I *THINK* I can work around that glitch.

As the Tascam is a deck designed for studio use, it can deal with odd formats, but produce a "red book" standard output on the second drive.

I have collected songs off u-tube to make CDs for my son and the discs out of the machine play anywhere. And it makes bit-for-bit copies of commercial CDs without a hiccup. Including the cover art etc. if it is contained on the original disc.

The Alesis may actually be more finnicky- wanting either Red Book or the Alesis format... (but can do higher resolution that standard CD format too)

Red Book just refers to the set of original specifications for the format cooked up by Phillips and Sony. I guess they were published in a book with red cover.

Like Jim, before I sold my Tascam CD recorder, I used it to play the stuff my Sony wouldn't play.

I have a keyboard for it. When I make a cd I can add song titles etc. but I mainly use it for duplicates. I have the wired remote as well. Looks like a wireless but it plugs in for reliability.
