So I took the Pavillion out and popped the covers to do the annual blow dust and vacuum cat hair thing and decided to "fix" the Writable CD drive. OIt would get hung up trying to start the tray out. A little smack on the side of the houising and it would spring out. Got both drives out of the case, and uncovered the writable drive and cleaned and lubed it.Now the tray will go in and out just fine but no other drive functions are present.

WTF???????????????

Look carefully at the cdrom on the rear.. check the jumpers for master, slave, or cable select. If master, then the last connector from your motherboard should be plugged in, slave - the one in the middle, and cable select - depends on where your hard drive is. Double check that... Go into your bios (usually a "press del for setup" whatever prompt when you first turn it on).. and verify that the drive is showing up on the list (usually the first screen)

It sounds like you pulled the IDE cable connector up at the board.

Many Pavilions seem to be micro-ATX forms and getting at something means something will get unplugged or has to be REMOVED FIRST (the power supply being one of those things).

Open the case and check your cables. The power connectors are fine if the drives open manually.

The Cd only drive works if i tap the door shut a little further when the tray goes in, otherwise it just spits it back out so that would indicate the ide cable is ok??

Hmmm.. just an idea...

But new drives can be had for as little as 20 bucks, and that's with both DVD and burning capabilities. It may just be a good idea to replace one or both (try one or the other and see if it shows up to see if one is causing both to be "down").

I have dozens of read only and read/write CD drives and at least a read-only DVD of good quality but I can't send them in the Priority Mail box as it's full.

I could bet a cable could be replaced or else they might be reinstalled through Add/Remove Hardware or System management (you need to be the system administrator).

So did ya follow a few idears.. like double checking the ide cable... hooking one at a time up ... all that?

One thing.. if that one drive thinks it's "open" when it's not...

The 2nd drive in the chain does read. the tray didn't close all the way thus the immediate kick back out. I can get it to stay and read if I slam the door shut. The main DVD write/read drive is F%$#@&. HP wants 157.00, excuse me a "reseller" wants 157.00 as HP no longer supports that model. Found one at "cyberguys" Jer, I'll post a link in a minute here and see if you can tell me this will work. It certainly appears I have all the systyem requirements.

I have some new drives laying around also. They can be had for $20 or so.

Post you picture so we can tell you if it is the correct drive. You really only need to check the interface to make sure it matches yours. If your machine is older then most likely you need an IDE drive and not a Sata Optical Drive.

Heheh.. El Webbie read my mind. Used to be that you can always get an IDE-interfaced drive, but motherboards are starting to only come with SATA connections. Pic needed.. or if you can tell us ... on the back of the drive, is there a large 1-2" ribbon connected or a small 1/8" SATA cable?

Web, are those light scribe DVD/CD readers and writers??/
The drive you showed is SATA connected, which is OK if you have a spare SATA port on your motherboard.

Lightscribe?? Dang... first I heard of that (I'm getting old and not paying attention to "tech" as much as I used to). That is some COOL shit there... make your own labels right on the disc!

Yeah, as long as you have a SATA port free, go for it Lee.
