Ed Shaughnessy, famed drummer for the Carson-era Tonight Show band over nearly three decades has died at 84 of a heart attack.
Shaughnessy was considered one of the great drummers in jazz and his steady beat and drive tied up the moxie of the band perfectly. Perhaps the only person who could play drums as well as Shaughnessy on the show was CARSON HIMSELF (an incredible percussionist in his own right).
He was the go to guy when the jokes weren't directed towards Tommy Newsom or Doc and was almost always in there with the rimshots.
