Leslie Neilsen, star of serious, and not so serious films and television shows has died from pneumonia at the age of 84.
An unsuccessful run on ABC television in Police Squad led to the three successful comedy films of "The Naked Gun" franchise, playing Lt. Frank Drebin.
Neilsen's ascension to comedy legend came with the 1980 classic, Airplane! which created the legendary line about Don't call me Shirley.
Having been the captain of the Poseidon and a prankster seemed to suggest the Airplane! film and what fun Leslie could have with the disaster genre. It did elevate his status as a star considerably, to be certain.
A great all-around actor has left us.
