Man, been thinking forever about a pair of these again and everybody in town that knows me knew it. Anyway, just came home and these were sitting on my deck. One woofer needs to be refoamed so who here does that? I think I may reveneer these this Summer also but they are not really bad, some lemon oil and they will probably look pretty decent

These are the 40-4036A models, no black pained bases. I don't remember mine original pair that I bought as a kid having that horn tweeter though???? Mine (IIRC) looked way smaller and also was inverted? Nando???

A pair of Realistic Mach Three speakers at your doorstep! And the sun is also out today, Ron? From what I have seen those look as they should. Most times, people like to refoam their own driver surrounds. Ben has experience with refoaming surrounds, as do a few others.

Mach 3's???? Never heard of them!!!! I thought they did away with the huge mid horn when they went to the Mach 2's???? They brought the big mid horn back??? And a horn tweeter? I have to do some researching on these I see!

Thanks Lee, I will give him a call this week and see what he says, I probably won't be able to do anything with them for awhile anyway until the financial situation imporves

Lee, Mach 8's would be cool indeed for a Mach 8 system. I think Pioneer built alot of Realistics speakers back then but I may be wrong. Pioneer, Sony and Aiwa were the main builders for Tandy back then

Wow, I just realized that these are actually bigger then the previous Mach series speakers, taller and look like at least 1" deeper. Supposed to be less boomier with the bass to from what little I have read so far

I sold my Realistic Mach One speakers last year. They are quite impressive. I haven't heard any of the Twos or Threes. I hope those Threes you have Ron will impress you, too, once they are ready to be heard.

Yeah, refoaming is a snap. It ain't nothin but a grunt as they say.

I think I've done a dozen or more with no problems whatsoever. I always used the "remove dust cap and shim the voice coil to center" method.

The parts express kits are nice, and complete. I have no experience with the others.

I think I when I do the Cerwins, I will be using the shim method. Didnt use any shims or remove any dust caps on the 901's. I used the tone cd. It worked really well but I think could be a little tricky with big drivers.

As mentioned, I've never tried the tone method, but one thing I like about the shim method is that you can suggest to the cone that it sit at a particular position (in slight opposition to what the spider might like) which can make it easier to work with, both when applying the glue, and if you set the cone into position before the glue is at the right level of tack. Too soon, and the surround will want to squirm a bit, but too late, and the surround will not want to move ever again.

IOW, in addition to making it easier to glue the surround and basket edge, the shims let me apply the surround to the basket a little sooner, which gives more time/ leeway to position it exactly.

This makes it sound more difficult/ extreme than it is, but you get the idea.
