I'm not a metal person. Have had some pricey. The 4040 is overrated. Sutton asked me this question. I like my Denons; but the Blue label gives them a run for their money. I'm not just saying that because they are my tapes. I think for the money you aren't going to get a better tape. I have owned some 40.00 used tapes. I think I gave some away. MA-XG is a good tape. I have owned some spendy tapes. Now I have Denons and Blue labels. You don't have a 130 denons and not like them. LOL

Which Denon metals are you talking about? The MG-X? I really love the HD8, but that's a hybrid chrome/metal particle tape.

I stand by my TDK MA-XG's, I've had enough experience with those to vouch for top dog of the pack. It really depends on what your deck likes, some super metals are hard to dial in on certain decks. Most decks were set up for TDK from the factory, so the dial in would work best with them. Maxell never had the clout that TDK had as a manufacture suggested tape, just read the OM's on most decks.

Stuwee I loved the HD-8. To me and this is just my opinion. The Blue label is just as good. I don't even own one of my metal tapes. LOL I do have a MA-XG floating around here somewhere. I have owned almost if not every tape Denon made. And the Sony metals Jerry gave me.

Larry

PS I bought some HD-8s awhile back LOL Me buying another brand tape. LOL Don't tell any one.

Well, like I said, the HD8 isn't a true metal, it's a hybrid, that may be why you like it so much, remember metal tapes need more oomph from the electronics in the tapehead to get the best out of them, you can record a metal on a non-metal capable deck, but it won't sound it's best, you will have a very hard time erasing the tape on the same deck.

BTW, I love your 'blue' labels too, great all around tape :thumbright:

You know my customers all choose chrome tape. They record as a Type II and do playback as a type I. They get better highs that way. They have all tried it and agreed. I sell no type I yet or cobalt. Only chrome so far.

WOT??
Dude that's just wrong, they're just bumping the highs thru an EQ curve, when you record at 70us and play back at 120us you're just bumping the highs, they need a better deck, just sayin' :silent:

They are selling these tapes. I'm not going to say I have a bunch; but on some prerecorded tapes they did the same thing. Yes they are bumping the highs that is the purpose of doing it.

A lot of these don't have decks like we do. LOL So you sell them what sounds good. Justin has a LX-3. No one else has come out and said what they had. Nick never comes around anymore.

Well, I'd never chastise anyone who uses cassette's, I still do the normal/chrome switch trick on some tapes with the Luxman because it's a cheap mid-line deck, but I prefer to use the tone controls on the preamp to get better highs, the switch trick adds too much emphasis on the upper highs for my ears. But everyone is different.

Justin is using a Tascam high speed duplicator. So it probably helps him get a more rounded sound. Even though he can dupe on Type IIs. You loose something when you do the high speed.

I just posted a link to Phoenix tape on another forum, you should get some hits, and hopefully some sales soon
If it goes to the store I don't get them yet; but thank you.

Larry
I read all tape threads on other forums and lot's of folks ask about alternatives to ebay for NOS and brand new tape, I always link them to the store.
