Even if the hurricane dies out fairly quickly it will dump more bilge water than a political campaign.

Those of you in the Carolinas and Georgia, be careful.

I read that Greenville, SC has cancelled school on Wednesday to send the school bus fleet out to evacuate, and I don't doubt they aren't the only ones.

I live more in the North central part of NC so I'm not expecting much more than wind and rain, which is desperately needed. The bad part of this for much of the NC coast is that they had some fairly substantial rainfall and flooding on the Eastern third of the state last week. The ground is pretty much saturated so there's no telling what to expect.

The coastal communities will probably be better off unless the wind speeds just go nuts. Rainwater right along the coast runs off pretty fast. What the coastal communities are more worried about than anything is the timing. What will the potential storm surge and corresponding high tide do?

If I remember that's what hurricane Hugo did to Charleston in Sept. '89. The highest storm surge observation was 20.2 feet (6.2 m) at Seewee Bay near McClellanville. Yikes!!!

I live about 8 miles southwest of Columbia, SC. Last October's flood was something to behold, even if as an example of how vulnerable we are to the forces of nature. It was a nightmare.

Where I live is mostly sandy soil and the water is absorbed quickly, or at least it used to be. I think there's still a lot of water in the soil (sand!) and anything more won't run off as quickly as it used to.

It REALLY sucks to live in Haiti...

Can't we tow it towards Mexico?

I'd prefer more storms either way at this point, get THEM to go to California.
